@article{fdi:010079017, title = {{I}nsight into the {K}atari-{L}ago {M}enor {B}asin aquifer, {L}ake {T}iticaca-{B}olivia, inferred from geophysical ({TDEM}), hydrogeological and geochemical data}, author = {{A}viles, {G}. {P}. {F}. and {D}escloitres, {M}arc and {D}uwig, {C}{\'e}line and {R}ossier, {Y}. and {S}padini, {L}. and {L}egchenko, {A}natoli and {S}oruco, {A}. and {A}rgollo, {J}. and {P}erez, {M}. and {M}edinaceli, {W}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he increasing demand for water and irrigation in the semi-arid {B}olivian {A}ltiplano requires a better knowledge of the available resources, particularly groundwater. {T}he aim of this study is to provide a first insight into the hydrogeological structure (0-200 m deep) and groundwater dynamics of the {K}atari-{L}ago {M}enor {B}asin aquifer located between the {E}astern {C}ordillera and {L}ake {T}iticaca, {B}olivia. {T}his aquifer is studied using geophysical data (a total of 187 {T}ime {D}omain {E}lectromagnetic ({TDEM}) soundings), piezometric data (97 groundwater level measurements) and geochemical data (52 groundwater samples), combined with geological, lithological and topographical information. {T}he results allowed identifying stratigraphic models consistent with the {Q}uaternary sediments being hydraulically connected and behaving as a single regional basin-aquifer. {T}his basin-aquifer is delimited by the most ancient lake invasions towards the southern, western and northern sides and by the lower limit of rock glaciers towards the eastern side. {A} large portion of the aquifer presents an unconfined behaviour varying from 50 to 150 m while the confined portion varies from 100 to 150 m. {G}roundwater flow within the {K}atari and {L}ago {M}enor {B}asin aquifer is composed of several interconnected groundwater flow systems. {T}he main groundwater flow system starts in the high mountain ranges of the {E}astern {C}ordillera, follows the topographic {P}iedmont gradient ({NE} to {SW}) and discharges in a series of wetlands. {T}his multidisciplinary approach proved to be an appropriate method to derive a consistent picture of the hydrogeological functioning of the {K}atari-{L}ago {M}enor {B}asin aquifer.}, keywords = {{K}atari-{L}ago {M}enor {B}asin aquifer ; {G}roundwater resources ; {T}ime-domain ; electromagnetic soundings ; {BOLIVIE} ; {ANDES} ; {TITICACA} {LAC} ; {KATARI} {BASSIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {S}outh {A}merican {E}arth {S}ciences}, volume = {99}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 102479 [21 p.]}, ISSN = {0895-9811}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jsames.2019.102479}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010079017}, }
