@article{fdi:010078574, title = {{T}he {COVID}-19 pandemic in francophone {W}est {A}frica : from the first cases to responses in seven countries}, author = {{B}onnet, {E}mmanuel and {B}odson, {O}. and {L}e {M}arcis, {F}r{\'e}d{\'e}ric and {F}aye, {A}. and {S}ambieni, {N}.{E}. and {F}ournet, {F}lorence and {B}oyer, {F}lorence and {C}oulibaly, {A}. and {K}adio, {K}. and {D}iongue, {F}.{B}. and {R}idde, {V}al{\'e}ry}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {I}n early {M}arch 2020, the {COVID}-19 pandemic hit {W}est {A}frica. {I}n response, countries in the region quickly set up crisis management committees and implemented drastic measures to stem the spread of the {SARS}-{C}o{V}-2 virus. {T}he objective of this article is to analyse the epidemiological evolution of {COVID}-19 in seven {F}rancophone {W}est {A}frican countries ({B}enin, {B}urkina {F}aso, {C}{\^o}te d'{I}voire, {G}uinea, {M}ali, {N}iger, {S}enegal) as well as the public health measures decided upon during the first 7 months of the pandemic. {M}ethods: {O}ur method is based on quantitative and qualitative data from the pooling of information from a {COVID}-19 data platform and collected by a network of interdisciplinary collaborators present in the seven countries. {D}escriptive and spatial analyses of quantitative epidemiological data, as well as content analyses of qualitative data on public measures and management committees were performed. {R}esults: {A}ttack rates ({O}ctober 2020) for {COVID}-19 have ranged from 20 per 100,000 inhabitants ({B}enin) to more than 94 per 100,000 inhabitants ({S}enegal). {A}ll these countries reacted quickly to the crisis, in some cases before the first reported infection, and implemented public measures in a relatively homogeneous manner. {N}one of the countries implemented country-wide lockdowns, but some implemented partial or local containment measures. {A}t the end of {J}une 2020, countries began to lift certain restrictive measures, sometimes under pressure from the general population or from certain economic sectors. {C}onclusion: {M}uch research on {COVID}-19 remains to be conducted in {W}est {A}frica to better understand the dynamics of the pandemic, and to further examine the state responses to ensure their appropriateness and adaptation to the national contexts.}, keywords = {{BENIN} ; {BURKINA} {FASO} ; {COTE} {D}'{IVOIRE} ; {GUINEE} ; {MALI} ; {NIGER} ; {SENEGAL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{BMC} {P}ublic {H}ealth}, volume = {21}, numero = {1}, pages = {1490 [17 en ligne]}, ISSN = {1471-2458}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.1186/s12889-021-11529-7}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010078574}, }
