@article{fdi:010078519, title = {{A} new species of {G}yrodactylus ({M}onogenea, {G}yrodactylidae), an ectoparasite from the endemic {I}ranocichla hormuzensis ({T}eleostei, {C}ichlidae), the only {I}ranian cichlid}, author = {{V}anhove, {M}.{P}.{M}. and {B}oeger, {W}.{A}. and {M}uterezi {B}ukinga, {F}. and {V}olckaert, {F}.{A}.{M}. and {H}uyse, {T}. and {P}ariselle, {A}ntoine}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}ranocichla hormuzensis occupies a biogeographically peculiar position. {T}his endemic of southern {I}ran is the only {I}ranian cichlid. {W}hile it is phylogenetically related to {A}frican oreochromine members of the cichlid family, it remains unclear how it has dispersed into its current range. {I}t is one of the many lasting enigmas of cichlid biogeography. {M}onogenean fish parasites may provide useful additional information in such cases. {T}herefore, {I}. hormuzensis was examined for these flatworms. {A} gyrodactylid parasite is reported and compared to congeners from the {P}alearctic and from cichlids. {I}n this way, we verify whether it shows affinities to parasites from fishes that are either biogeographically or phylogenetically close to {I}ranocichla hormuzensis. {T}he species is new to science and is described as {G}yrodactylus jalalii sp. nov. {T}his is the first description of a parasite infecting {I}. hormuzensis. {B}ecause of the fixation method or age of the material, {DNA} could not be isolated. {D}ue to the lack of genetic data, no conclusions can be drawn on its phylogenetic positioning. {I}ndeed, {G}yrodactylus phylogeny cannot be inferred from morphological characteristics alone. {M}oreover, the congeners phenotypically reminiscent of the new species belong to a {G}yrodactylus clade which is highly diverse in geographic range and host choice. {H}ence, there is no evidence linking the new species to an exclusively {A}frican or cichlid-bound {G}yrodactylus lineage.}, keywords = {{IRAN} ; {GOLFE} {PERSIQUE} ; {ORMUZ} {DETROIT}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}uropean {J}ournal of {T}axonomy}, volume = {30}, numero = {}, pages = {1--10}, ISSN = {2118-9773}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.5852/ejt.2012.30}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010078519}, }
