@article{fdi:010078386, title = {{D}evelopment of {A}edes aegypti and {A}edes albopictus ({D}iptera: {C}ulicidae) larvae feeding on the plant material contained in the water}, author = {{D}arriet, {F}r{\'e}d{\'e}ric}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {I}n this laboratory study we measured the trophic performances of {A}edes aegypti and {A}edes albopictus larvae ({D}iptera: {C}ulicidae), both being vectors of the dengue fever, chikungunya and zika virus in the world. {M}ethods: {D}epending on the quantities of plant material contained in the breeding sites, the bioassays enabled to assess the times it took for 50% of imaginal emergence to occur ({IE}t50). {T}hey also enabled to determine the amounts of plant material needed for 50% of adult emergence ({IE}50). {R}esults: {W}ater containing 3.3 g of plant material per liter allowed 50% of {A}e. albopictus adults to emerge within 8 days ({IE}t50), against 60 days at 0.5g/liter. {A}s for {A}e. aegypti, the {IE}t50 took 8 days at 3.3g/l against 29 days at 1.7g/l. {T}he {IE}50 also revealed that 0.61g of plant material were needed for a 50% of adult emergence of {A}e. albopictus. {T}o reach the same survival rate among {A}e. aegypti, the larvae must grow in an environment twice as rich in food supply. {C}onclusion: {T}his research work has revealed that the {A}e. albopictus larvae can develop in water collections where the shortage of organic material hinders or compromises the development and survival of {A}e. aegypti. {T}he outstanding trophic performances of {A}e. albopictus would thus partly account for the invasive character of {A}e. albopictus, as well as the dying out of its competitor {A}e. aegypti in the regions of the world shared by both species.}, keywords = {{ARBOVIROSE} ; {VECTEUR} ; {LUTTE} ; {DEVELOPPEMENT} {BIOLOGIQUE} ; {IMAGO} ; {ELEVAGE} {DE} {LABORATOIRE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}nnals of {C}ommunity {M}edicine and {P}ractice}, volume = {2}, numero = {1}, pages = {art. no 1014 [4 ]}, ISSN = {2475-9465}, year = {2016}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010078386}, }
