@article{fdi:010078179, title = {{F}unctional redundancy between flavodiiron proteins and {NDH}-1 in {S}ynechocystis sp. {PCC} 6803}, author = {{N}ikkanen, {L}. and {S}anchez, {A}. {S}. and {E}rmakova, {M}. and {R}ogner, {M}. and {C}ournac, {L}aurent and {A}llahverdiyeva, {Y}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n oxygenic photosynthetic organisms, excluding angiosperms, flavodiiron proteins ({FDP}s) catalyze light-dependent reduction of {O}(2)to {H}2{O}. {T}his alleviates electron pressure on the photosynthetic apparatus and protects it from photodamage. {I}n{S}ynechocystissp. {PCC} 6803, four {FDP} isoforms function as hetero-oligomers of {F}lv1 and {F}lv3 and/or {F}lv2 and {F}lv4. {A}n alternative electron transport pathway mediated by the {NAD}({P}){H} dehydrogenase-like complex ({NDH}-1) also contributes to redox hemostasis and the photoprotection of photosynthesis. {F}our {NDH}-1 types have been characterized in cyanobacteria: {NDH}-1(1)and {NDH}-1(2), which function in respiration; and {NDH}-1(3)and {NDH}-1(4), which function in {CO}(2)uptake. {A}ll four types are involved in cyclic electron transport. {A}long with single {FDP} mutants ( increment flv1and {D}elta flv3) and the double {NDH}-1 mutants ( increment d1d2, which is deficient in {NDH}-1(1,2)and increment d3d4, which is deficient in {NDH}-1(3,4)), we studied triple mutants lacking one of {F}lv1 or {F}lv3, and {NDH}-1(1,2)or {NDH}-1(3,4). {W}e show that the presence of either {F}lv1/3 or {NDH}-1(1,2), but not {NDH}-1(3,4), is indispensable for survival during changes in growth conditions from high {CO}2/moderate light to low {CO}2/high light. {O}ur results show functional redundancy between {FDP}s and {NDH}-1(1,2)under the studied conditions. {W}e suggest that ferredoxin probably functions as a primary electron donor to both {F}lv1/3 and {NDH}-1(1,2), allowing their functions to be dynamically coordinated for efficient oxidation of photosystem {I} and for photoprotection under variable {CO}(2)and light availability.}, keywords = {{F}lavodiiron proteins ; {F}lv ; {NDH}-1 ; photosynthesis ; {S}ynechocystis sp ; {PCC} ; 6803 ; cyanobacteria ; {M}ehler-like reaction ; alternative electron ; transfer ; photoprotection}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}lant {J}ournal}, volume = {103}, numero = {4}, pages = {1460--1476}, ISSN = {0960-7412}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.1111/tpj.14812}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010078179}, }
