@article{fdi:010078174, title = {{S}exual transmission of {Z}ika virus on {T}witter : a depoliticised epidemic}, author = {{V}alente, {P}. {K}. and {M}orin, {C}. and {R}oy, {M}. and {M}ercier, {A}. and {A}tlani {D}uault, {L}a{\¨e}titia}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{D}uring global health crises, different narratives regarding infectious disease epidemics circulate in traditional media (e.g. news agencies, television channels) and social media. {O}ur study investigated the narratives related to sexual transmission of {Z}ika virus that circulated on {T}witter during a public health emergency and analyzed the relationship between information on {T}witter and on traditional media. {W}e examined 10,748 tweets posted during the peaks of {T}witter activity between {J}anuary and {M}arch 2016. {P}osts in {E}nglish, {S}panish, {F}rench, and {P}ortuguese and websites linked to tweets were manually reviewed and analyzed thematically. {D}uring the study period, there were three peaks of {T}witter activity related to the sexual transmission of {Z}ika. {M}ost tweets in the first peak (n = 412) had humorous/sarcastic content (55%). {M}ost tweets in the second and third peaks (n = 5,154 and n = 5,182, respectively) disseminated information (>93%). {A}cross languages, textual and visual content on the websites were predominantly placed online by traditional media and highlighted epidemiological narratives published by public health agencies, with little or no mention of the concerns or experiences of individuals most affected by {Z}ika. {P}rioritising epidemiological/clinical aspects of epidemics may have a depoliticising effect and contribute to overlooking socio-economic determinants of the {Z}ika epidemic and issues related to reproductive justice.}, keywords = {{Z}ika virus ; social media ; health communication ; communications media ; reproductive health}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}lobal {P}ublic {H}ealth}, volume = {15}, numero = {11}, pages = {1689--1701}, ISSN = {1744-1692}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.1080/17441692.2020.1768275}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010078174}, }
