@article{fdi:010078138, title = {{S}orting the wheat from the chaff : a review of {BIN}s associated with groupers of {V}ietnam and the implications for species identification from {DNA} barcoding}, author = {{D}urand, {J}ean-{D}ominique and {P}ham, {M}. {H}. and {T}ran, {T}. {T}. {V}. and {H}oang, {D}. {H}. and {V}o, {Q}. {V}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {E}pinephelidae is a marine fish family that has been the focus of worldwide taxonomical attention due to its economic value. {R}ecent molecular-based phylogenies have improved understanding of species diversity within this family. {N}onetheless, species misidentification or hybridization has led to a barcode index number ({BIN}) being associated with several species, which hampers a clear species identification within the {BOLD} system. {I}n this study, grouper diversity in {V}ietnam was investigated to check the species inventory, provide a {DNA} barcode library for {V}ietnam, and reevaluate {BIN}s associated with some species that are present in {V}ietnam. {T}o this end, 157 specimens were barcoded corresponding to 30 species and 31 {BIN}s. {N}ine species were new records, bringing to 49 the number of species inventoried for {V}ietnam. {I}n {BOLD}, these species are associated with 75 {BIN}s, 31 species being represented by more than one {BIN}. {A} careful review of these {BIN}s, considering the present results from {V}ietnam, the species composition and frequency of each {BIN} in {BOLD}, and reference species sequences from phylogenetic studies, revealed those misidentified or hybrid specimens that artificially increased the number of {BIN}s per species. {A}fter appropriate revision, 15 species still remained associated with more than one {BIN}. {A} phylogeographic analysis of these species demonstrated that most of the {BIN}s derived from evolutionary lineages with geographic distributions that match well known biogeographic units in the {I}ndo-{P}acific. {B}eyond the species identification, these multiple {BIN}s of each species can be used to track the biogeographic origin of each of the associated specimens.}, keywords = {{C}ytochrome oxidase {I} ; {BOLD} ; {M}isidentification ; {B}iogeography ; {E}pinephelidae ; {VIET} {NAM}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}arine {B}iodiversity}, volume = {50}, numero = {3}, pages = {art. 38 [23]}, ISSN = {1867-1616}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.1007/s12526-020-01051-1}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010078138}, }
