  abstract = {{B}ackground: {T}he mean age at menarche remains poorly documented in {A}frica. {A}im: {T}o document levels, trends, and determinants of mean age at menarche in selected {A}frican populations. {S}ubjects and methods: {T}he {W}orld {F}ertility {S}urveys recorded the age at menarche in 12 {A}frican countries. {T}hese surveys were conducted from 1977 to 1983 and were based on large representative samples of national populations. {D}emographic and {H}ealth {S}urveys provided trends in adult height for the same cohorts. {R}esults: {T}he mean age at menarche was higher in sub-{S}aharan {A}frica (14.5 years) than in {N}orth-{A}frica (13.5 years). {A}ge at menarche was declining significantly in all sub-{S}aharan {A}frican countries, but only in one {N}orth-{A}frican country. {T}he speed of decline in sub-{S}aharan {A}frica averaged 0.47 years for a 30-year period, comparable to the speed of decline in {E}urope. {S}ub-{S}aharan {A}frican countries with higher increase in female adult height also had larger declines in mean age at menarche. {I}n multivariate analysis, trends in age at menarche were correlated with trends in adult height and child survival. {C}onclusion: {I}n sub-{S}aharan {A}frica, age at menarche was undergoing a transition similar to that of {E}uropean countries in the nineteenth century and was associated with improving health of young women. {N}orth-{A}frican countries were more advanced.},
