@article{fdi:010077842, title = {{G}lobal {R}iver {R}adar {A}ltimetry {T}ime {S}eries ({GRRATS}) : new river elevation earth science data records for the hydrologic community [{D}ata {P}aper]}, author = {{C}oss, {S}. and {D}urand, {M}. and {Y}i, {Y}. {C}. and {J}ia, {Y}. {Y}. and {G}uo, {Q}. and {T}uozzolo, {S}. and {S}hum, {C}. {K}. and {A}llen, {G}. {H}. and {C}almant, {S}t{\'e}phane and {P}avelsky, {T}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he capabilities of radar altimetry to measure inland water bodies are well established, and several river altimetry datasets are available. {H}ere we produced a globally distributed dataset, the {G}lobal {R}iver {R}adar {A}ltimeter {T}ime {S}eries ({GRRATS}), using {E}nvisat and {O}cean {S}urface {T}opography {M}ission ({OSTM})/{J}ason-2 radar altimeter data spanning the time period 2002-2016. {W}e developed a method that runs unsupervised, without requiring parameterization at the measurement location, dubbed virtual station ({VS}) level, and applied it to all altimeter crossings of ocean-draining rivers with widths >900 m (>34 % of the global drainage area). {W}e evaluated every {VS}, either quantitatively for {VS} locations where in situ gages are available or qualitatively using a grade system. {W}e processed nearly 1.5 million altimeter measurements from 1478 {VS}s. {A}fter quality control, the final product contained 810 403 measurements distributed over 932 {VS}s located on 39 rivers. {A}vailable in situ data allowed quantitative evaluation of 389 {VS}s on 12 rivers. {T}he median standard deviation of river elevation error is 0.93 m, {N}ash{S}utcliffe efficiency is 0.75, and correlation coefficient is 0.9. {GRRATS} is a consistent, well-documented dataset with a user-friendly data visualization portal, freely available for use by the global scientific community.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}arth {S}ystem {S}cience {D}ata}, volume = {12}, numero = {1}, pages = {137--150}, ISSN = {1866-3508}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.5194/essd-12-137-2020}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010077842}, }
