@article{fdi:010077748, title = {{I}mpact of climate change on sea surface wind in {S}outheast {A}sia, from climatological average to extreme events : results from a dynamical downscaling}, author = {{H}errmann, {M}arine and {N}go-{D}uc, {T}. and {T}rinh-{T}uan, {L}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}outheast {A}sia ({SEA}) climate shows a large range of variability scales, from extreme events to interannual variability. {U}nderstanding its answer to climate change is of primary scientific and socio-economic importance. {IPCC} 5th assessment report however pointed the lack of knowledge in regional climate change and its impact in {SEA}. {I}n particular little is known about the answer of wind to climate change. {T}he impact of climate change on sea surface wind speed is investigated here, examining changes in daily and extreme event scales, interannual variability and climatological average between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. {F}or that the {R}eg{CM}4 regional model was used to perform a dynamical downscaling of {CMIP}5 simulations done with {CNRM}-{CM}5 global climate model under {RCP}4.5 and {RCP}8.5 hypothesis. {C}omparisons with {Q}uik{SCAT} satellite data show that the downscaled simulations perform overall better than the global simulations. {B}oth models produce regionally and seasonally contrasted results in terms of daily wind speed answer to climate change. {G}lobal simulations produce mostly weak and non-significant changes, only suggesting an intensification of northeast winter monsoon in the northern {SEA}. {C}onversely regional downscaled simulations suggest from {M}arch to {N}ovember in the northern {S}outh {C}hina {S}ea and {P}acific regions a significant weakening of wind speed from climatological to daily scales (summer monsoon to extreme values), for regions and periods of initially strong values, associated with a 40-50% decrease of tropical cyclones frequency. {T}hese changes result from the increase of mean meridional south to north sea level pressure gradient and decrease its daily variability.}, keywords = {{S}ea surface wind ; {C}limate change ; {D}ynamical downscaling ; {R}egional climate model ; {CORDEX}-{SEA} ; {T}ropical cyclones ; {ASIE} {DU} {SUD} {EST} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {MER} {DE} {CHINE} ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {INDONESIE} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}limate {D}ynamics}, volume = {54}, numero = {3-4}, pages = {2101--2134}, ISSN = {0930-7575}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.1007/s00382-019-05103-6}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010077748}, }
