@article{fdi:010077449, title = {{R}espiratory and gastrointestinal infections at the 2017 {G}rand {M}agal de {T}ouba, {S}enegal : a prospective cohort survey}, author = {{H}oang, {V}. {T}. and {G}oumballa, {N}. and {D}ao, {T}. {L}. and {L}y, {T}. {D}. {A}. and {N}inove, {L}. and {R}anque, {S}. and {R}aoult, {D}. and {P}arola, {P}. and {S}okhna, {C}heikh and de {S}anti, {V}. {P}. and {G}autret, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {T}he {G}rand {M}agal of {T}ouba is the largest {M}uslim pilgrimage in {S}enegal with a potential for infectious disease transmission. {M}ethods: {C}linical follow-up, adherence to preventive measures and q{PCR}-based respiratory and gastrointestinal pathogens carriage pre- and post-{M}agal, were assessed. {R}esults: 110 pilgrims from {S}outh {S}enegal were included. {T}he duration of stay in {T}ouba was 3 days. 41.8% and 14.5% pilgrims reported respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms. {M}ost individuals having the onset of symptoms during their stay in {T}ouba, or soon after returning. {T}he acquisition of rhinoviruses, coronaviruses and adenovirus was 13.0, 16.7 and 4.6% respectively and that of {S}treptococcus pneumoniae and {H}aemophilus influenzae was 3.7% and 26.9%. {A}cquisition of gastrointestinal viruses and parasites was low, while bacterial acquisition ranged from 2.2% for {C}ampylobacter jejuni to 33.0% for enteropathogenic {E}scherichia coli. {C}onclusion: {T}his preliminary study confirms that {G}rand {M}agal pilgrims are likely to be exposed to communicable disease risk as observed in other pilgrimage settings. {F}urther study including larger numbers of pilgrims are needed to investigate potential risk factors for respiratory and gastrointestinal infections at the {G}rand {M}agal.}, keywords = {{R}espiratory tract infections ; {G}astrointestinal infection ; {PCR} ; {G}rand magal ; {T}ouba ; {P}ilgrims ; {SENEGAL} ; {TOUBA}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}ravel {M}edicine and {I}nfectious {D}isease}, volume = {32}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 101410 [7 p.]}, ISSN = {1477-8939}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1016/j.tmaid.2019.04.010}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010077449}, }
