@article{fdi:010077364, title = {{N}oe{M}, a new nodulation gene involved in the biosynthesis of {N}od {F}actors with an open-chain oxidized terminal residue and in the symbiosis with {M}imosa pudica}, author = {{D}aubech, {B}. and {P}oinsot, {V}. and {K}lonowska, {A}gnieszka and {C}apela, {D}. and {C}haintreuil, {C}l{\'e}mence and {M}oulin, {L}ionel and {M}archetti, {M}. and {M}asson-{B}oivin, {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he beta-rhizobium {C}upriavidus taiwanensis is a nitrogen-fixing symbiont of {M}imosa pudica. {N}od factors produced by this species were previously found to be pentameric chitin-oligomers carrying common {C}18:1 or {C}16:0 fatty acyl chains, {N}-methylated and {C}-6 carbamoylated on the nonreducing terminal {N}-acetylglucosamine and sulfated on the reducing terminal residue. {H}ere, we report that, in addition, {C}. taiwanensis {LMG}19424 produces molecules where the reducing sugar is open and oxidized. {W}e identified a novel nodulation gene located on the symbiotic plasmid p{R}alta, called noe{M}, which is involved in this atypical {N}od factor structure. noe{M} encodes a transmembrane protein bearing a fatty acid hydroxylase domain. {T}his gene is expressed during symbiosis with {M}. pudica and requires {N}od{D} and luteolin for optimal expression. {T}he closest noe{M} homologs formed a separate phylogenetic clade containing rhizobial genes only, which are located on symbiosis plasmids downstream from a nod box. {C}orresponding proteins, referred to as {N}oe{M}, may have specialized in symbiosis via the connection to the nodulation pathway and the spread in rhizobia. noe{M} was mostly found in isolates of the {M}imoseae tribe, and specifically detected in all tested strains able to nodulate {M}. pudica. {A} noe{M} deletion mutant of {C}. taiwanensis was affected for the nodulation of {M}. pudica, confirming the role of noe{M} in the symbiosis with this legume.}, keywords = {{C}upriavidus taiwanensis ; host specificity ; {M}imosa pudica ; {N}od factors ; nodulation ; rhizobium-legume symbiosis}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}olecular {P}lant-{M}icrobe {I}nteractions}, volume = {32}, numero = {12}, pages = {1635--1648}, ISSN = {0894-0282}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1094/mpmi-06-19-0168-r}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010077364}, }
