@article{fdi:010077351, title = {{M}oored observations of transport in the {S}olomon {S}ea}, author = {{A}lberty, {M}. and {S}printall, {J}. and {M}ac{K}innon, {J}. and {G}ermineaud, {C}. and {C}ravatte, {S}ophie and {G}anachaud, {A}lexandre}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {S}olomon {S}ea is a marginal sea in the western {P}acific warm pool that contains the {S}outh {P}acific low latitude western boundary currents. {T}hese low latitude western boundary currents chiefly exit the {S}olomon {S}ea through three channels ({V}itiaz {S}trait, {S}t. {G}eorge's {C}hannel, and {S}olomon {S}trait) and serve as the primary source water for the {E}quatorial {U}ndercurrent. {S}imulations have shown that transport partitioning between the straits determines the water mass structure of the {E}quatorial {U}ndercurrent, but the relative contributions of transport through each strait have not been observed before. {A}s part of the {S}outhwest {P}acific {O}cean {C}irculation and {C}limate {E}xperiment, an array of moorings was deployed simultaneously in the three outflow channels of the {S}olomon {S}ea from {J}uly 2012 until {M}arch 2014 to resolve transport and water properties in each strait. {A}bove deep isopycnals (sigma(0) <= 27.5), {V}itiaz and {S}olomon {S}traits account for 54.2% and 36.2% of the mean transport, respectively, with the remaining 9.6% exiting through {S}t. {G}eorge's {C}hannel. {T}he strongest subinertial transport variability is observed in {S}olomon {S}trait and dominates total {S}olomon {S}ea transport variability, and a significant fraction of this variability is at intraseasonal time scales. {F}inally, a previously unobserved deep current at 1,500-m depth is found to enter the {S}olomon {S}ea through {S}olomon {S}trait, with a deployment-mean transport of 4.6 {S}v ({S}v equivalent to 10(6) m(3)/s).}, keywords = {tropical {P}acific ; low latitude western boundary currents ; {S}olomon {S}ea ; mooring observations ; intraseasonal variability ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE} ; {SALOMON} {MER}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {G}eophysical {R}esearch : {O}ceans}, volume = {124}, numero = {11}, pages = {8166--8192}, ISSN = {2169-9275}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1029/2019jc015143}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010077351}, }
