  abstract = {{T}he palm genus {A}strocaryum with 40 species is common in tropical {S}outh {A}merica extending northwards reaching {C}entral {A}merica and {T}rinidad. {T}wenty-six species grow in {B}razil, 14 in {P}eru, 11 in {C}olombia, 9 in {G}uyana, 9 in {S}uriname, 8 in {B}olivia, 8 in {F}rench {G}uiana, 6 in {V}enezuela, 4 in {E}cuador, 2 in {C}osta {R}ica, 2 in {P}anama, and 1 in {T}rinidad. {T}he genus includes solitary or caespitose species in the following classes: (i) large palms with tall stem, (ii) palms with large leaves and medium-sized, or short, or subterranean stem, (iii) slender to medium-sized palms, (iv) acaulescent palms with very short leaves. {A}lthough most {A}strocaryum species are used by humans, only a few may have promising economic potential and are significantly important in the local and regional trade. {I}n this article, {I} propose a new taxonomic classification based on characters of the fruit, flowers and vegetative parts. {T}he genus is divided in three subgenera: (i) {M}unbaca with two sections, {M}unbaca and {M}umbacusu, each with 2 species; (ii) {A}strocaryum with two sections, {E}uchambira (new section with 1 species) and {A}strocaryum with three subsections - {A}strocaryum (9 species), {A}caulia (5 species) and {P}erstaminata (new subsection with 1 species); (iii) {M}onogynanthus with four sections: {M}onogynanthus (with 3 species), {A}yri (1 species), {G}uatinajo (new section with 1 species) and {H}uicungo (new section) that includes three subsections - {H}uicungo (7 species); {S}achacungo (new subsection with 5 species), and {M}urumuru (3 species). {A} synoptic review of the genus is presented herein, including descriptions and illustrations as well as data on distribution, habit, ecology and common names for each species. {A}n identification key to all species is also supplied.},
