  abstract = {{S}everal species of {L}eishmania are responsible for leishmaniases in {T}hailand, although little is known about their transmission. {S}ergentomyia gemmea has been suspected several times to transmit {L}eishmania martiniquensis. {S}ome captures carried out in {T}hailand and {L}ao {P}eople's {D}emocratic {R}epublic have emphasized the scarcity of {S}e. gemmea, comprising only 1% of the collected females. {T}he sequencing of cytochrome {B} mt{DNA} of our specimens showed that our specimens are not grouped with other {S}e. gemmea previously deposited in {G}en{B}ank. {T}he latter are grouped with some {S}e. khawi and {S}e. hivernus that we processed in the present study. {W}e suspect misidentifications and propose focusing on the most useful characters for identification of {S}e. gemmea based on the examination of type-specimens. {T}he examination of the ascoids exhibiting anterior spurs is the most important one. {H}owever, we also describe {S}e. raynali n. sp. exhibiting comparable spurs but differing from {S}e. gemmea by its original cibarium. {F}inally, the vectorial role of {S}e. gemmea appears very questionable in the absence of new evidence.},
