@article{fdi:010077160, title = {{M}olecular investigation and phylogeny of species of the {A}naplasmataceae infecting animals and ticks in {S}enegal}, author = {{D}ahmani, {M}. and {D}avoust, {B}. and {S}ambou, {M}. and {B}assene, {H}. and {S}candola, {P}. and {A}meur, {T}. and {R}aoult, {D}. and {F}enollar, {F}. and {M}ediannikov, {O}leg}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground {O}ur study aimed to assess the diversity of the species of {A}naplasmataceae in {S}enegal that infect animals and ticks in three areas: near {K}eur {M}omar {S}arr (northern region), {D}ielmo and {D}iop ({S}ine {S}aloum, central region of {S}enegal), and in {C}asamance (southern region of {S}enegal). {M}ethods {A} total of 204 ticks and 433 blood samples were collected from ruminants, horses, donkeys and dogs. {T}icks were identified morphologically and by molecular characterization targeting the 12{S} r{RNA} gene. {M}olecular characterization of species of {A}naplasmataceae infecting {S}enegalese ticks and animals was conducted using the 23{S} r{RNA}, 16{S} r{RNA}, rpo{B} and gro{EL} genes. {R}esults {T}icks were identified as {R}hipicephalus evertsi evertsi (84.3%), {H}yalomma rufipes (8.3%), {H}yalomma impeltatum (4.9%), {R}. bursa (1.5%) and {R}. muhsamae (0.9%). {T}he overall prevalence of {A}naplasmataceae infection in ticks was 0.9%, whereas 41.1% of the sampled animals were found infected by one of the species belonging to this family. {W}e identified the pathogen {A}naplasma ovis in 55.9% of sheep, {A}. marginale and {A}. centrale in 19.4% and 8.1%, respectively, of cattle, as well as a putative new species of {A}naplasmataceae. {T}wo {A}naplasma species commonly infecting ruminants were identified. {A}naplasma cf. platys, closely related to {A}. platys was identified in 19.8% of sheep, 27.7% of goats and 22.6% of cattle, whereas a putative new species, named here provisionally "{C}andidatus {A}naplasma africae", was identified in 3.7% of sheep, 10.3% of goats and 8.1% of cattle. {E}hrlichia canis and {A}naplasma platys were identified only from dogs sampled in the {K}eur {M}omar {S}arr area. {E}hrlichia canis was identified in 18.8% of dogs and two {R}. e. evertsi ticks removed from the same sheep. {A}naplasma platys was identified in 15.6% of dogs. {N}either of the dogs sampled from {C}asamance region nor the horses and donkeys sampled from {K}eur {M}omar {S}arr area were found infected by an {A}naplasmataceae species. {C}onclusions {T}his study presents a summary of {A}naplasmataceae species that infect animals and ticks in three areas from the northern, central and southern regions of {S}enegal. {T}o our knowledge, our findings demonstrate for the first time the presence of multiple {A}naplasmataceae species that infect ticks and domestic animals in {S}enegal. {W}e recorded two potentially new species commonly infecting ruminants named here provisionally as {A}naplasma cf. platys and "{C}andidatus {A}naplasma africae". {H}owever, {E}. canis was the only species identified and amplified from ticks. {N}one of the other {A}naplasmataceae species identified in animals were identified in the tick species collected from animals.}, keywords = {{A}naplasmataceae ; {PCR} ; {T}icks ; {H}orse ; {D}og ; {D}onkey ; {R}uminants ; {S}enegal ; {SENEGAL} ; {SINE} {SALOUM} ; {CASAMANCE} ; {KEUR} {MOMAR} {SARR} ; {DIELMO} ; {DIOP}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}arasites and {V}ectors}, volume = {12}, numero = {1}, pages = {art. 495 [p.]}, ISSN = {1756-3305}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1186/s13071-019-3742-y}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010077160}, }
