@article{fdi:010077154, title = {{S}tudying abroad : a necessary path towards a successful academic career in social sciences in {L}ebanon ?}, author = {{K}abbanji, {L}ama and {A}wada, {H}. and {H}asbani, {M}. and {E}l {H}achem, {E}. and {T}abar, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}cholars have only recently started to take an interest in the return of highly qualified migrants to their country of origin, especially when it comes to {A}rab countries. {T}his research, conducted between 2014 and 2016, provides evidence on the {L}ebanese case, a country where most social scientists have been trained abroad. {T}his article uses a multi-level approach and compares careers paths of social scientists trained in {L}ebanon and abroad, working in {L}ebanese public and private universities. {I}f a foreign diploma appears as a significant factor of career differentiation, the analysis undertaken in this article nuances this finding. {I}t reveals to what extent the characteristics of the academic field in origin countries such as {L}ebanon shape the career paths of academics. {P}ublic and, to a lesser extent private universities have become ideological state apparels which are used by the ruling elites to ensure their reproduction, through the revaluation of social capital. {H}owever, this reproduction is not made without social actors and their involvement. {L}ebanese academics develop strategies to accumulate the relevant symbolic capital in order to be recruited or promoted. {T}he activation of the relevant political and sectarian networks is, therefore, one of the key strategies which social scientists mobilise as a first or last resort to acquire university positions.}, keywords = {{S}tudent mobility ; return migration ; career path ; social sciences ; {L}ebanon ; {LIBAN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nternational {R}eview of {S}ociology = {R}evue {I}nternationale de {S}ociologie}, volume = {29}, numero = {3}, pages = {390--408}, ISSN = {0390-6701}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1080/03906701.2019.1672351}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010077154}, }
