@article{fdi:010077132, title = {{I}nsights from 180 years of mitochondrial variability in the endangered {M}editerranean monk seal ({M}onachus monachus)}, author = {{G}aubert, {P}hilippe and {J}usty, {F}. and {M}o, {G}. and {A}guilar, {A}. and {D}anyer, {E}. and {B}orrell, {A}. and {D}endrinos, {P}. and {O}zturk, {B}. and {I}mprota, {R}. and {T}onay, {A}. {M}. and {K}aramanlidis, {A}. {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}editerranean monk seals ({MMS}) are among the most endangered marine mammals on {E}arth. {W}e screened mitochondrial variability (control region [{CR}1] and mitogenomes) of the species through a 180-yr timeframe and extended by 20% (n = 205) the number of samples from a previous investigation, including historical specimens from 1833 to 1975. {A}lthough we detected two new, rare {CR}1 haplotypes, genetic diversity remained extremely low. {F}ully resolved haplotype median network and rarefaction analysis both suggested low probability for further unscreened haplotypes. {T}here was no clear phylogeographic structure across the 12 marine subdivisions covered by the species' range. {H}aplotypes previously considered diagnostic of the extant {N}orth {A}tlantic and eastern {M}editerranean populations had their distributions extended into the western {M}editerranean and the {N}orth {A}tlantic, respectively, by both historical and recent samples. {O}ur study suggests that {MMS} have been genetically depauperate since at least the mid-19th century, and that the massive 1997 die-off in {W}estern {S}ahara ({N}orth {A}tlantic) could have caused local haplotype extinctions. {O}ur results support the hypothesis of past metapopulation dynamics across the species range, where the current segregation into geographically distant and genetically depauperate breeding populations (i.e., {N}orth {A}tlantic and eastern {M}editerranean {S}ea) derives from the combined effects of historical extinctions, genetic drift on small breeding groups, and persistently low levels of genetic diversity.}, keywords = {ancient {DNA} ; conservation genetics ; genetic variability ; {M}editerranean ; monk seal ; {M}editerranean {S}ea ; metapopulation ; mitochondrial {DNA} ; {M}onachus monachus ; {N}orth {A}tlantic {O}cean ; {MEDITERRANEE} ; {ATLANTIQUE} {NORD}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}arine {M}ammal {S}cience}, volume = {35}, numero = {4}, pages = {1489--1511}, ISSN = {0824-0469}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1111/mms.12604}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010077132}, }
