@article{fdi:010076989, title = {{S}patio-temporal survey of small mammal-borne {T}rypanosoma lewisi in {C}otonou, {B}enin, and the potential risk of human infection}, author = {{D}obigny, {G}authier and {G}authier, {P}hilippe and {H}ou{\'e}m{\'e}nou, {G}. and {D}ossou, {H}.{J}. and {B}adou, {S}. and {E}tougb{\'e}tch{\'e}, {J}. and {T}atard, {C}. and {T}ruc, {P}hilippe}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{H}uman trypanosomoses are the sleeping sickness in {A}frica and {C}hagas disease in {L}atin {A}merica. {H}owever, atypical human infections by animal trypanosomes have been described, but poorly investigated. {A}mong them, the supposed rat-specific {T}. lewisi was shown to be responsible for a few severe cases. {I}n {A}frica, the scarcity of data and the null awareness about the atypical human trypanosomoses suggest that the number of cases may be higher that currently thought. {F}urthermore, {T}. lewisi is resistant to normal human serum and therefore a po-tential human pathogen. {I}n order to document {T}. lewisi distribution and ecology, a q{PCR}- and 16{DNA} sequen-cing-based survey was conducted in 369 rodents from three urban districts of {C}otonou city, {B}enin, during three different periods of the same year. {O}ur study demonstrated very high prevalence (57.2%) even when considering only individuals identified as positive through {DNA} sequencing (39.2%). {B}lack rats represented the most dominant as well as the most {T}. lewisi-parasitized species. {N}o diffrence was retrieved neither between seasons nor districts, suggesting a large infestation of rodents by trypanosomes throughout the year and the city. {O}ur results suggest that conditions are gathered for rat to human transmission of {T}. lewisi in these socio-en-vironmentally degraded urban areas, thus pointing towards the rapidly urbanizing {A}bidjan-{L}agos corridor as a region at particular risk.}, keywords = {{COTONOU} ; {BENIN} ; {ABIDJAN} ; {LAGOS} ; {COTE} {D}'{IVOIRE} ; {NIGERIA}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nfection, {G}enetics and {E}volution}, volume = {75}, numero = {}, pages = {art. no 103967 [7 ]}, ISSN = {1567-7257}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1016/j.meegid.2019.103967}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010076989}, }
