@article{fdi:010076499, title = {{A}gricultural innovation and environmental change on the floodplains of the {C}ongo {R}iver}, author = {{C}omptour, {M}. and {C}osiaux, {A}riane and {C}oomes, {O}. {T}. and {B}ader, {J}ean-{C}laude and {M}alaterre, {P}. {O}. and {Y}oka, {J}. and {C}aillon, {S}. and {M}c{K}ey, {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{C}limate-driven environmental changes bring new risks but also opportunities to populations living along the world's major rivers. {B}ased on ethnoecological fieldwork, in this paper we examine how people living in the cuvette centrale of the {C}ongo basin have adopted flood-recession agriculture on islands in the {C}ongo {R}iver, taking advantage of a secular shift since the 1980s in the hydrological regime of the {C}ongo {R}iver. {A}nalyses of the hydrological data reveal that this shift decreased flood risk and significantly extended the growing season on the islands, long enough to enable cultivation of fast-maturing varieties of manioc and other crops. {F}lood-recession farming on islands in the river is today not only an important source of food, but also a source of income for women, who are primarily responsible for seasonal cultivation of fields during the low-water season. {H}ydrological changes alone are insufficient to explain the adoption of the new agricultural practice; adoption also arose as a result of dynamic interactions among river fishing, trading, and broader socio-economic forces. {C}limate-change models project an increased frequency of extreme floods. {O}ur results suggest that this change may limit island cultivation in the future. {M}ore generally, our findings point to the importance of looking beyond single-factor, solely environmental explanations in studies of climate-change adaptation.}, keywords = {adaptation ; climate change ; {C}ongo {B}asin ; ethnoecology ; flood-recession farming ; social-ecological system ; {CONGO} {CUVETTE} ; {CONGO} {BASSIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}eographical {J}ournal}, volume = {16}, numero = {1}, pages = {16--30}, ISSN = {0016-7398}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1111/geoj.12314}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010076499}, }
