@article{fdi:010076482, title = {{E}ffect of the {A}frican greenbelt position on {W}est {A}frican summer climate : a regional climate modeling study}, author = {{B}amba, {A}. and {D}iallo, {I}. and {T}oure, {N}. {E}. and {K}ouadio, {K}. and {K}onare, {A}. and {D}rame, {M}. {S}. and {D}iedhiou, {A}rona and {S}ilue, {S}. and {D}oumbia, {M}. and {T}all, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his modeling study is conducted to examine the potential impact of the reforestation (greenbelt) location (either in {S}ahel or in {G}uinean region) on {W}est {A}fricansummer climate system. {T}o this end, three simulations using the regional climate model {R}eg{CM}4 driven by {ERA}-{I}nterim reanalysis were performed at 50km horizontal resolution over a {W}est {A}frican domain for the period 2000-2011. {T}he first experiment, namely the control ({CTRL}), uses the standard vegetation cover, while the two others incorporate throughout the model integration, a zonal reforestation band of evergreen broadleaf over different locations: (i) over a 13 degrees {N}-17 degrees {N} band latitudes in a {S}ahel-{S}ahara region (experiment hereafter referred to as {GB}15{N}) and (ii) between 8.5 degrees {N}-11.5 degrees {N} in the {G}uinea {C}oast region (experiment hereafter referred to as {GB}10{N}). {A} comparison of the {CTRL} experiment with observation reveals a faithful reproduction of the mean boreal and summer seasonal precipitation pattern, though substantial dry/wet biases remain, especially in the {A}tlantic {O}cean. {I}n addition, the seasonal cycle over sub-regions matches satisfactory the observed pattern. {T}he {GB}15{N} reforestation leads to a precipitation increase in the range of 2-4mm/day over the forested areas, whereas in the {GB}10{N} reforestation, precipitation increase is weaker and not necessarily located in the forested areas. {T}emperature cooling is observed over the reforested area and may be explained by a decrease of ground heat flux related to a reduction of the surface albedo.}, keywords = {{AFRIQUE} {DE} {L}'{OUEST} ; {SAHEL} ; {SAHARA} ; {GUINEE} {GOLFE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}heoretical and {A}pplied {C}limatology}, volume = {137}, numero = {1-2}, pages = {309--322}, ISSN = {0177-798{X}}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1007/s00704-018-2589-z}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010076482}, }
