@article{fdi:010076106, title = {{S}tructure of {M}asaya and {M}omotombo volcano, {N}icaragua, investigated with a temporary seismic network}, author = {{O}bermann, {A}. and {M}olinari, {I}. and {M}{\'e}taxian, {J}ean-{P}hilippe and {G}rigoli, {F}. and {S}trauch, {W}. and {W}iemer, {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}ince the end of 2013, the region around the two volcanoes {M}asaya and {M}omotombo, which includes the {N}icaraguan capital {M}anagua, has shown an unusually high seismic and volcanic activity. {I}n {D}ecember 2015, the {M}omotombo volcano erupted after 110 years of quiescence. {S}ince mid-{D}ecember 2015, the {M}asaya volcano has also shown gradually increasing activity, including the formation of a lava lake in its main crater. {B}y adding 30 broadband stations, we had temporarily ({D}ecember 2016-{M}arch 2017) densified the permanent {N}icaraguan seismic network around these volcanoes to study the local seismicity and image the subsurface structure. {D}uring the observation period, we observed an overall low level of seismicity. {R}ecorded events around {M}omotombo likely consist of aftershocks of the {M}5.5 earthquake that struck this area on {S}eptember, 26th, 2016. {A}t {M}asaya, we did not observe volcano-tectonic events. {U}sing the continuous waveform recordings, we perform a 3{D} ambient seismic noise tomography that reveals a first image of the subsurface velocity structure below the {M}asaya and {M}omotombo volcanoes. {W}hile {M}omotombo shows a typical elongated low shear-wave velocity anomaly that reaches depths of about 8 km, {M}asaya does not show indications of a deep plumbing system. {A}t {M}asaya, we have indications of a shallow (0-3 km) magmatic chamber, offset to the west and not directly below the active {S}antiago vent, where the crater lake is located {A}t greater depth (3-8 km) a low velocity anomaly towards the northeast coincides in location with a modelled positive gravity anomaly and could indicate the presence of a former intrusive body. {W}ith this study we want to trigger further interest in the diverse tectonic and volcanic features of {N}icaragua. {F}uture, long-term seismic imaging and monitoring projects are of critical interest for the estimation of seismic and volcanic risks in {M}anagua and the surroundings.}, keywords = {{V}olcano ; {T}omography ; {A}mbient seismic noise ; {L}ava lake, {M}asaya, ; {M}omotombo, volcanic unrest ; {NICARAGUA} ; {MASAYA} {VOLCAN} ; {MOMOTOMBO} {VOLCAN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {V}olcanology and {G}eothermal {R}esearch}, volume = {379}, numero = {}, pages = {1--11}, ISSN = {0377-0273}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jvolgeores.2019.04.013}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010076106}, }
