@article{fdi:010076070, title = {{U}ncovering hidden coral diversity : a new cryptic lobophylliid scleractinian from the {I}ndian {O}cean}, author = {{A}rrigoni, {R}. and {B}erumen, {M}. {L}. and {S}tolarski, {J}. and {T}erraneo, {T}. {I}. and {B}enzoni, {F}rancesca}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{E}xtant biodiversity can easily be underestimated owing to the presence of cryptic taxa, even among commonly observed species. {S}cleractinian corals are challenging to identify because of their ecophenotypic variation and morphological plasticity. {I}n addition, molecular analyses have revealed the occurrence of cryptic speciation. {H}ere, we describe a new cryptic lobophylliid genus and species {P}araechinophyllia variabilis gen. nov., sp. nov., which is morphologically similar to {E}chinophyllia aspera and {E}. orpheensis. {T}he new taxon occurs in {M}ayotte {I}sland, {M}adagascar, the {G}ulf of {A}den and the {R}ed {S}ea. {S}ix molecular markers ({COI}, 12{S}, {ATP}6-{NAD}4, {NAD}3-{NAD}5, histone {H}3 and {ITS}) and 46 morphological characters at three different levels (macromorphology, micromorphology and microstructure) were examined. {T}he resulting molecular phylogenetic reconstruction showed that {P}araechinophyllia gen. nov. represents a distinct group within the {L}obophylliidae that diverged from the lineage leading to {E}chinophyllia and {O}xypora in the {E}arly {M}iocene, approximately 21.5 {M}a. {T}he morphological phylogenetic reconstruction clustered {P}araechinophyllia gen. nov., {E}chinophyllia and {O}xypora together in a single clade. {A} sole morphological character, calice relief, discriminated {P}araechinophyllia gen. nov. from the latter two genera, suggesting that limited morphological variation has occurred over a long period. {T}hese results highlight the importance of cryptic taxa in reef corals, with implications for population genetics, ecological studies and conservation.}, keywords = {{OCEAN} {INDIEN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}ladistics}, volume = {35}, numero = {3}, pages = {301--328}, ISSN = {0748-3007}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1111/cla.12346}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010076070}, }
