@article{fdi:010075749, title = {{A}ssessing {O}rinoco river sediment discharge trend using {MODIS} satellite images}, author = {{G}allay, {M}. and {M}artinez, {J}ean-{M}ichel and {M}ora, {A}. and {C}astellano, {B}. and {Y}epez, {S}. and {C}ochonneau, {G}{\'e}rard and {A}lfonso, {J}. {A}. and {C}arrera, {J}. {M}. and {L}opez, {J}. {L}. and {L}araque, {A}lain}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he aim of this study was to derive the {S}urface {S}uspended {S}ediment {C}oncentration ({SSSC}) and river sediment discharge (for the period 2000-2016) along the {O}rinoco {R}iver reaches using {MODIS} remote sensing data. {A} single {SSC} retrieval algorithm was calibrated using {HYBAM} long term monitoring program data (n = 183). {T}he comparison of satellite and field measurements showed a {RMSE} of 32%, corresponding to a mean absolute error of 21 mg l(-1). {T}hese results supported the use of {MODIS} sensors to monitor the {SSSC} at six virtual stations in the middle and lower reaches of the {O}rinoco {R}iver. {T}he highest mean {SSSC} were found downstream of the {M}eta {R}iver (101 mg l(-1)) and of the {A}pure {R}iver (99 mg l(-1)), which provide the major sediment input to the {O}rinoco main stream. {T}he lowest mean {SSSC} was found upstream of the {M}eta {R}iver (42 mg l(-1)). {I}n the lower reach, at {C}iudad {B}olivar station we assessed a mean {SSSC} of 88 mg l(-1). {MODIS}-derived and ground-derived assessments of the annual sediment discharge show very fine agreement, within -2%. {C}oupling satellite-derived {SSSC} estimates and river discharge monitoring data, we calculated the {O}rinoco {R}iver sediment discharge at {C}iudad {B}olivar station between 2001 and 2016. {F}or a mean {O}rinoco {R}iver discharge of 33,320 m3.s(-1), the sediment loads varied from 75 to 103 {M}t.yr(-1), with a mean value of 89 {M}t.yr-1 ({RSD} of 9%) corresponding to a sediment yield of 91-125 t.km(-2)yr-1 with no positive or negative trends over the observed period.}, keywords = {{MODIS} ; {S}uspended sediments ; {S}ediment load ; {O}rinoco river ; {W}ater color ; {VENEZUELA} ; {COLOMBIE} ; {ORENOQUE} {COURS} {D}'{EAU}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {S}outh {A}merican {E}arth {S}ciences}, volume = {91}, numero = {}, pages = {320--331}, ISSN = {0895-9811}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jsames.2019.01.010}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010075749}, }
