@article{fdi:010075725, title = {{W}ater and nutrient uptake capacity of leaf-absorbing trichomes vs. roots in epiphytic tank bromeliads}, author = {{L}eroy, {C}{\'e}line and {G}ril, {E}. and {O}uali, {L}. {S}. and {C}oste, {S}. and {G}erard, {B}. and {M}aillard, {P}. and {M}ercier, {H}. and {S}tahl, {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he water and nutrient uptake mechanisms used by vascular epiphytes have been the subject of a few studies. {W}hile leaf absorbing trichomes ({LAT}s) are the main organ involved in resource uptake by bromeliads, little attention has been paid to the absorbing role of epiphytic bromeliad roots. {T}his study investigates the water and nutrient uptake capacity of {LAT}s vs. roots in two epiphytic tank bromeliads {A}echmea aquilega and {L}utheria splendens. {T}he tank and/or the roots of bromeliads were watered, or not watered at all, in different treatments. {W}e show that {LAT}s and roots have different functions in resource uptake in the two species, which we mainly attributed to dissimilarities in carbon acquisition and growth traits (e.g., photosynthesis, relative growth rate, non-structural carbohydrates, malate), to water relation traits (e.g., water and osmotic potentials, relative water content, hydrenchyma thickness) and nutrient uptake (e.g., {N}-15-labelling). {W}hile the roots of {A}. aquilega did contribute to water and nutrient uptake, the roots of {L}. splendens were less important than the role played by the {LAT}s in resource uptake. {W}e also provide evidenced for a synergistic effect of combined watering of tank and root in the {B}romelioideae species. {T}hese results call for a more complex interpretation of {LAT}s vs. roots in resource uptake in bromeliads.}, keywords = {{C}arbon metabolism ; {N}utrient uptake ; {N}-15 labelling ; {P}lant performance ; {T}ank bromeliad ; {W}ater status}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}nvironmental and {E}xperimental {B}otany}, volume = {163}, numero = {}, pages = {112--123}, ISSN = {0098-8472}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1016/j.envexpbot.2019.04.012}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010075725}, }
