@article{fdi:010075656, title = {{A} {P}athovar of {X}anthomonas oryzae infecting wild grasses provides insight into the evolution of pathogenicity in rice agroecosystems}, author = {{L}ang, {J}. {M}. and {P}erez-{Q}uintero, {A}. {L}. and {K}oebnik, {R}alf and {D}u{C}harme, {E}. and {S}arra, {S}. and {D}oucoure, {H}. and {K}eita, {I}. and {Z}iegle, {J}. and {J}acobs, {J}. {M}. and {O}liva, {R}. and {K}oita, {O}. and {S}zurek, {B}oris and {V}erdier, {V}al{\'e}rie and {L}each, {J}. {E}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{X}anthomonas oryzae ({X}o) are globally important rice pathogens. {V}irulent lineages from {A}frica and {A}sia and less virulent strains from the {U}nited {S}tates have been well characterized. {X}anthomonas campestris pv. leersiae ({X}cl), first described in 1957, causes bacterial streak on the perennial grass, {L}eersia hexandra, and is a close relative of {X}o. {L}. hexandra, a member of the {P}oaceae, is highly similar to rice phylogenetically, is globally ubiquitous around rice paddies, and is a reservoir of pathogenic {X}o. {W}e used long read, single molecule real time ({SMRT}) genome sequences of five strains of {X}cl from {B}urkina {F}aso, {C}hina, {M}ali, and {U}ganda to determine the genetic relatedness of this organism with {X}o. {N}ovel transcription activator-like effectors ({TALE}s) were discovered in all five strains of {X}cl. {P}redicted {TALE} target sequences were identified in the {L}eersia perrieri genome and compared to rice susceptibility gene homologs. {P}athogenicity screening on {L}. hexandra and diverse rice cultivars confirmed that {X}cl are able to colonize rice and produce weak but not progressive symptoms. {O}verall, based on average nucleotide identity ({ANI}), type {III} ({T}3) effector repertoires, and disease phenotype, we propose to rename {X}cl to {X}. oryzae pv. leersiae ({X}ol) and use this parallel system to improve understanding of the evolution of bacterial pathogenicity in rice agroecosystems.}, keywords = {{X}anthomonas oryzae ; transcription activator-like effectors ({TALE}s) ; agroecosystem ; cutgrass ; rice}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{F}rontiers in {P}lant {S}cience}, volume = {10}, numero = {}, pages = {507 [15 ]}, ISSN = {1664-462{X}}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.3389/fpls.2019.00507}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010075656}, }
