@article{fdi:010075586, title = {{V}ariability of key biological parameters of round sardinella {S}ardinella aurita and the effects of environmental changes}, author = {{B}alde, {B}. {S}. and {S}ow, {F}. {N}. and {B}a, {K}. and {E}kau, {W}. and {B}rehmer, {P}atrice and {K}antoussan, {J}. and {F}all, {M}. and {D}iouf, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}e examined growth rates and reproductive characteristics of {S}ardinella aurita off {S}enegal and other coastal areas over a 20 year period (1995-2014) to determine how they relate to variations in environmental characteristics of coastal waters. {B}ased on fish length-frequency data and a coastal upwelling index, we found that {S}. aurita recruitment tends to occur during the periods of most intensive upwelling ({M}arch-{A}pril off {S}enegal). {P}eak reproduction corresponds to periods of low sea-surface temperature (in {F}ebruary or {M}arch). {T}he sex ratio was remarkably consistent during the 30 year study period and so was not affected by environmental changes. {W}e hypothesise that {S}. aurita takes advantage of the higher zooplankton productivity that occurs in coastal waters when upwelling brings nutrient-rich water to the surface (i.e., it increases its growth rate and accumulates energy reserves for spawning). {G}rowth performance appears to be strongly dependent on environmental conditions. {T}he timing of spawning seems to occur when food (zooplankton) is most available for supplying the energy requirements needed by adults for spawning and early development of larvae. {E}nvironmental changes seem to have a significant effect on {S}. aurita growth and reproduction, which endorses their high phenotypic plasticity.}, keywords = {data poor fisheries ; environmental variability ; size structure ; small pelagic ; spawning period ; {W}est {A}frica ; {SENEGAL} ; {ATLANTIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {F}ish {B}iology}, volume = {94}, numero = {3}, pages = {391--401}, ISSN = {0022-1112}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1111/jfb.13903}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010075586}, }
