@article{fdi:010075473, title = {{D}ecadal modulation of the relationship between intraseasonal tropical variability and {ENSO}}, author = {{G}ushchina, {D}. and {D}ewitte, {B}oris}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {E}l {N}ino {S}outhern {O}scillation ({ENSO}) amplitude is modulated at decadal timescales, which, over the last decades, has been related to the low-frequency changes in the frequency of occurrence of the two types of {E}l {N}ino events, that is the {E}astern {P}acific ({EP}) and {C}entral {P}acific ({CP}) {E}l {N}inos. {M}eanwhile {ENSO} is tightly linked to the intraseasonal tropical variability ({ITV}) that is generally enhanced prior to {E}l {N}ino development and can act as a trigger of the event. {H}ere we revisit the {ITV}/{ENSO} relationship taking into account changes in {ENSO} properties over the last six decades. {T}he focus is on two main components of {ITV}, the {M}adden-{J}ulian {O}scillation ({MJO}) and convectively coupled equatorial {R}ossby waves ({ER}). {W}e show that the {ITV}/{ENSO} relationship exhibits a decadal modulation that is not related in a straight-forward manner to the change in occurrence of {E}l {N}ino types and {P}acific decadal modes. {W}hile enhanced {MJO} activity associated to {EP} {E}l {N}ino development mostly took place over the period 1985-2000, the {ER} activity is enhanced prior to {E}l {N}ino development over the whole period with a tendency to relate more to {CP} {E}l {N}ino than to {EP} {E}l {N}ino. {I}n particular the relationship between {ER} activity and {ENSO} was particularly strong for the period 2000-2015, which results in a significant positive long-term trend of the predictive value of {ER} activity. {T}he statistics of the {MJO} and {ER} activity is consistent with the hypothesis that they can be considered a state-dependent noise for {ENSO} linked to distinct lower frequency climate modes.}, keywords = {{I}ntraseasonal tropical variability ; {E}l {N}ino ; {D}ecadal modulation ; {PACIFIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}limate {D}ynamics}, volume = {52}, numero = {3-4}, pages = {2091--2103}, ISSN = {0930-7575}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1007/s00382-018-4235-y}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010075473}, }
