@article{fdi:010075277, title = {{S}erologic characteristics of hepatitis {B} virus among hill-tribe children in {O}mkoi district, {C}hiangmai province, {T}hailand}, author = {{K}hamduang, {W}. and {P}onchomcheun, {N}. and {Y}aaupala, {W}. and {P}uwaruengpat, {P}. and {H}ongjaisee, {S}. and {S}amleerat, {T}. and {Y}anola, {J}. and {P}ornprasert, {S}. and {R}atanasthien, {K}. and {J}ourdain, {G}onzague and {N}go-{G}iang-{H}uong, {N}icole and {S}irirungsi, {W}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}ntroduction: {T}hailand has integrated hepatitis {B} ({HB}) vaccination of newborns into the national {E}xpanded {P}rogram on {I}mmunization ({EPI}) in 1992. {T}his has led to a dramatic decrease of {HB}s{A}g prevalence in children. {H}owever, {HB} vaccine coverage in remote areas is not well-known. {T}his study aimed to investigate serologic characteristics of hepatitis {B} virus ({HBV}) among hill-tribe children in {O}mkoi {D}istrict, {C}hiangmai {P}rovince, {T}hailand. {M}ethodology: {T}his cross-sectional study was conducted on stored samples collected from hill-tribe children attending the primary/secondary school in {O}mkoi {D}istrict in {D}ecember 2014. {S}era were tested for {HB}s{A}g, anti-{HB}s and anti-{HB}c using enzyme immunoassays ({MUREX}, {D}ia{S}orin, {I}taly). {S}amples with anti-{HB}c positive were further assessed for {HBV} {DNA} using an in-house {HBV} {DNA} semi-nested polymerase chain reaction ({PCR}) assay. {R}esults: {O}f 210 children evaluated, 4 (1.9%:95% {CI} 0.5-4.8) were {HB}s{A}g-positive. {O}f the 206 children {HB}s{A}g negative, 17 were anti-{HB}c and anti-{HB}s positive, 15 anti-{HB}c positive only, 26 anti-{HB}s positive only and 148 negative for both anti-{HB}c and anti-{HB}s. {N}one of the children with anti-{HB}c were positive for {HBV} {DNA}. {C}onclusions: {A} high percentage of children had no markers of {HBV} protection suggesting that {HB} vaccine coverage was not optimal in this area. {O}ur results warrant {HBV} serologic investigations in other remote areas to assess whether {HB} vaccine coverage needs to be improved and to identify children who should be vaccinated.}, keywords = {hepatitis {B} virus ; vaccine ; serological markers ; hill-tribe children ; {T}hailand ; {THAILANDE} ; {CHIANG} {MAI} {PROVINCE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {I}nfection in {D}eveloping {C}ountries}, volume = {13}, numero = {2}, pages = {169--173}, ISSN = {1972-2680}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.3855/jidc.10661}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010075277}, }
