@article{fdi:010075236, title = {{I}nteractions between volcanism and geodynamics in the southern termination of the {E}cuadorian arc}, author = {{B}ablon, {M}. and {Q}uidelleur, {X}. and {S}amaniego, {P}ablo and {L}e {P}ennec, {J}ean-{L}uc and {A}udin, {L}aurence and {J}omard, {H}. and {B}aize, {S}. and {L}iorzou, {C}. and {H}idalgo, {S}. and {A}lvarado, {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his study focuses on the construction and evolution through time of volcanic edifices located in the southern part of the {E}cuadorian arc, with the objective to contribute to a better understanding of the interactions between magmatism, slab geometry and the activity of tectonic faults. {O}ur new groundmass {K}-{A}r ages obtained for a dozen volcanoes from the southern {Q}uaternary arc are rather young, without ages older than 800 ka, and highlight an increasing volcanic activity between 300 and 100 ka. {T}hese new temporal constraints suggest that a southward migration of the {E}cuadorian arc occurred during the last 600 ka. {W}e interpret this evolution as the result of major and recent geodynamic reorganization in {E}cuador related to the activation of lithospheric faults and to the flexure of the slab at depth, following the inland prolongation of the {G}rijalva fracture zone. {B}oth phenomena could have been induced by the oblique subduction of the {N}azca plate towards the convex margin of the {S}outh {A}merican continent, and the coupling of these two plates along the {W}adati-{B}enioff zone, progressively intensified by the {C}arnegie ridge subduction. {S}outhward migration of the slab flexure at depth could have changed pressure and temperature conditions, favoring the partial melting of the mantle wedge and magma genesis, thereby inducing a southward migration of the {E}cuadorian arc volcanoes. {T}hese results contribute therefore to a better knowledge of the current arc dynamics in the {N}orthern {A}ndes, and provide insights into the use of geochronological data applied to volcanic rocks for studies of past tectonic activity in {E}cuador.}, keywords = {{E}cuador ; {K}-{A}r dating ; {P}allatanga fault ; {V}olcanic arc migration ; {S}lab ; flexure ; {G}eodynamics ; {EQUATEUR}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}ectonophysics}, volume = {751}, numero = {}, pages = {54--72}, ISSN = {0040-1951}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1016/j.tecto.2018.12.010}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010075236}, }
