@article{fdi:010074995, title = {{D}ynamics of the west african monsoon. {P}art {IV} : analysis of 25-90-day variability of convection and the role of the indian monsoon}, author = {{J}anicot, {S}erge and {M}ounier, {F}. and {H}all, {N}. {M}. {J}. and {L}eroux, {S}. and {S}ultan, {B}enjamin and {K}iladis, {G}. {N}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his paper is part of a series of studies addressing the dynamics of the {W}est {A}frican summer monsoon at intraseasonal time scales between 10 and 90 days. {T}he dominant mode of 25-90-day convective variability in the {A}frican monsoon was investigated, starting from previous results involving the excitation of dry equatorial {K}elvin and {R}ossby waves by a negative diabatic heat source located over the warm pool. {T}his evolution is consistent with a significant contribution by a convectively coupled equatorial {R}ossby wave and the {MJO}. {O}n the other hand, convectively coupled {K}elvin waves as well as the dry {K}elvin wave signal have a very weak impact. {H}owever, there is more to the global control of the {A}frican summer monsoon than convectively coupled wave dynamics. {T}he active/break cycle of the {I}ndian monsoon, controlled by a northward-moving dipole of diabatic heating in the {I}ndian sector, can also influence the {A}frican monsoon through atmospheric teleconnections. {S}imulations performed with a dry primitive equation model show that this influence may be transferred through the northern {I}ndian heat source, which excites a {R}ossby cyclonic circulation propagating westward over {N}orth {A}frica that is cut off by the northward arrival of the equatorial {I}ndian heat source and the associated intrusion of an anticyclonic ridge. {L}ow-level westerly winds and moisture advection within the {ITCZ} consequently increase over {A}frica. {T}he mean time lag between an active phase over {I}ndia and over {A}frica is about 15-20 days.}, keywords = {{AFRIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {C}limate}, volume = {22}, numero = {6}, pages = {1541--1565}, ISSN = {0894-8755}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1175/2008jcli2314.1}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010074995}, }
