@article{fdi:010074931, title = {{A} group-based trajectory model for changes in pre-exposure prophylaxis and condom use among men who have sex with men participating in the {ANRS} {IPERGAY} trial}, author = {{S}agaon {T}eyssier, {L}uis and {M}abire, {X}. and {L}aguette, {V}. and {F}ressard, {L}. and {S}uzan-{M}onti, {M}. and {R}ojas {C}astro, {D}. and {H}all, {N}. and {C}apitant, {C}. and {M}eyer, {L}. and {C}hidiac, {C}. and {T}remblay, {C}. and {P}reau, {M}. and {S}pire, {B}. and {M}olina, {J}. {M}. and {ANRS} {IPERGAY} {S}tudy {G}roup}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{P}re-exposure prophylaxis ({P}r{EP}) is one of the most important milestones in {HIV} prevention for high-risk {HIV}-negative people. {T}he introduction of {P}r{EP} into the {HIV} prevention package has raised the question of possible risk compensation, and in particular, a reduction in condom use. {A}lthough open-label extension ({OLE}) studies have enabled investigators to examine risk compensation in more real-life settings, results to date have been inconclusive regarding {P}r{EP}-induced behavioral changes. {W}e aimed to identify behavioral trajectories over time for {P}r{EP} and condom use, and to investigate the link between these trajectories. {G}roup-based trajectory modeling using logistic specification was implemented. {D}ata of the 332 individuals participating in the double-blind and {OLE} phases of {ANRS} {IPERGAY} were used. {F}our distinct group trajectories were identified: 49.7% of the participants had "systematic adherence to {P}r{EP}," 19% had "high adherence to {P}r{EP}, 15.3% had "declining adherence to {P}r{EP}," and 16% had "low adherence to {P}r{EP}." {T}wo condom trajectories were identified: 53% (n = 176) of the 332 participants were "low-level users" of condoms, and 47% were "high-level users." {A}mong the former, 24.4% also belonged to the "low adherence to {P}r{EP}" group. {T}his most-at-risk group represented 13% of all the participants. {T}he effectiveness of offering sexual activity-based {P}r{EP} as part of the {F}rench {HIV} prevention package in the {ANRS} {IPERGAY} clinical trial is demonstrated by the relatively small proportion of participants that offset their low-level condom use with {P}r{EP} adherence. {T}he results from this work may help in the future development of tailored prevention programs for high-risk {HIV}-negative people.}, keywords = {{P}r{EP} ; condoms ; {MSM} ; anal intercourse ; multi-trajectory modeling ; {FRANCE} ; {CANADA}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}ids {P}atient {C}are and {S}tds}, volume = {32}, numero = {12}, pages = {495--510}, ISSN = {1087-2914}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1089/apc.2018.0081}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010074931}, }
