  abstract = {{A} new genus and species of skink, {K}uniesaurus albiauris, is here described from the {I}le des {P}ins off southern {N}ew {C}aledonia. {T}his new taxon possesses a unique suite of morphological apomorphies (scalation) that does not allow it to be placed in any existing {A}ustralasian eugongylid genus. {I}t is known only from a single area in dense coastal forest on limestone, on the main island of the {I}le des {P}ins. {T}he species area of occupancy is restricted, and the habitat occupied under threat from the spread of the highly invasive {L}ittle {R}ed {F}ire {A}nt {W}asmannia auropunctata. {T}hese factors place this new skink at a level of risk sufficient for it to be listed as {C}ritically {E}ndangered under {IUCN} {R}ed {L}ist criteria. {T}he affinities of the lizard fauna of the {I}le des {P}ins with respect to that present on southern {N}ew {C}aledonia are also discussed, most notably the absence from the {I}le des {P}ins of taxa typically restricted to ultramafic surfaces.},
