@article{fdi:010074887, title = {{L}ong-term evolution of the {W}est {A}frican transform margin : estimates of denudation from {B}enin using apatite thermochronology}, author = {{W}ildman, {M}. and {W}ebster, {D}. and {B}rown, {R}. and {C}hardon, {D}ominique and {R}ouby, {D}. and {Y}e, {J}. and {H}uyghe, {D}. and {D}all'{A}sta, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {B}enin continental margin was formed during the breakup of {G}ondwana through oblique rifting along transform faults. {T}he evolution of topography following breakup directly affects the evolution of sedimentary basins, which has major implications for hydrocarbon exploration in the region. {Q}uantitative constraints on erosion across {B}enin are limited to the {C}enozoic, based on analysis of dissected lateritic palaeolandscapes. {T}o resolve the {M}esozoic erosion history, we have obtained apatite fission-track and single-grain ({U}-{T}h-{S}m)/{H}e data from 18 samples collected across a 600 km long transect through {B}enin. {W}e invert these data, including available geological and geomorphological constraints, to obtain time-temperature paths, which are used to estimate magnitudes of denudation over the last 200 myr. {O}ur study suggests that denudation was focused over a c. 300 km long seaward sloping limb of the marginal upwarp and at the southern margin of the interior {I}ullemmeden {B}asin from 140 to 100 {M}a with lower magnitudes of denudation characterizing the continental interior and post-{C}retaceous evolution of the margin. {M}odels are consistent with modest burial (c. 1 km) of the {I}ullemmeden {B}asin between 120 and 85 {M}a, and of the continental margin between 85 and 45 {M}a. {B}y the {E}ocene the first-order relief of {B}enin had developed, with regional erosion rates < 20 m {M}a(-1) since then.}, keywords = {{BENIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of the {G}eological {S}ociety}, volume = {176}, numero = {1}, pages = {97--114}, ISSN = {0016-7649}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1144/jgs2018-078}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010074887}, }
