      <abstract>This article uses the present tense to discuss an institution from the past: the regulationist approach to prostitution developed in France in the nineteenth century. While this system has gradually disappeared in Europe, its survival in present-day Bolivia means that the similarities and ruptures between current and past methods used in the public and social management of prostitution can be analysed.
