@article{fdi:010073225, title = {{I}ntermediate water flows in the western {S}outh {P}acific : as revealed by individual {A}rgo floats trajectories and a model re-analysis}, author = {{B}arbot, {S}. and {P}etrenko, {A}. and {M}aes, {C}hristophe}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}hanks to the autonomous {A}rgo floats of the {OUTPACE} cruise ({O}ligotrophy to {U}l{T}ra-oligotrophy {PAC}ific {E}xperiment) and of the {THOT} ({T}a{H}itian {O}cean {T}ime series) project, some features of intermediate-flow dynamics, at around 1000 m depth, within the central and western {S}outh {P}acific {O}cean (around 19 degrees {S}, 156 degrees {E}-150 degrees {W}) are described. {I}n the {C}oral {S}ea, we highlight minima in dissolved oxygen of 140 mu mol kg(-1) that are associated with the signature of a southward transport of waters between two zonal jets: from the {N}orth {V}anuatu {J}et to the {N}orth {C}aledonia {J}et. {T}his transport takes place in the core of a cyclonic eddy or via the path between a cyclonic eddy and an anticyclonic one, highlighting the importance of mesoscale dynamics in upper thermocline and surface layers. {F}urther east, we observe a strong meridional velocity shear with long-term float trajectories going either eastward or westward in the lower thermocline. {M}ore interestingly, these trajectories also exhibit some oscillatory features. {T}hose trajectories can be explained by a single {R}ossby wave of 160-day duration and 855 km wavelength. {C}onsidering the thermohaline context, we confirm the meridional shear of zonal velocity and highlight a permanent density front that corresponds to the interface between {A}ntarctic intermediate waters and {N}orth {P}acific deep waters. {H}ence both circulation and thermohaline contexts are highly prone to instabilities and wave propagation.}, keywords = {{MER} {DE} {CORAIL} ; {NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE} ; {VANUATU} ; {PACIFIQUE} {SUD}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}iogeosciences}, volume = {15}, numero = {13}, pages = {4103--4124}, ISSN = {1726-4170}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.5194/bg-15-4103-2018}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010073225}, }
