@article{fdi:010072624, title = {{D}istribution of {M}edicago species and their microsymbionts in a saline region of {A}lgeria}, author = {{M}erabet, {C}hahinez and {B}ekki, {A}. and {B}enrabah, {N}. and {B}ey, {M}. {B}. {H}. and {B}ouchentouf, {L}. and {A}meziane, {H}. and {R}ezki, {M}. {A}. and {D}omergue, {O}. and {C}leyet {M}arel, {J}. {C}. and {A}varre, {J}ean-{C}hristophe and {B}{\'e}na, {G}illes and {B}ailly, {X}avier and {L}ajudie, {P}hilippe de}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}e studied symbiosis of {M}edicago ciliaris and {M}edicago polymorpha, two legumes of forage and ecological importance in {A}lgeria, especially in saline soil regions. {W}e report the spatial distribution of the two species and their microsymbionts along salinity gradient transects in the {S}ebkha of {M}isserghin ({A}lgeria, {N}orth {A}frica). {S}eeds and root nodules were sampled from 10 sites. {T}wenty-seven rhizobial strains were isolated from root nodules and characterized as fast-growers and slime-producers on yeast mannitol agar. {B}y partial sequencing of the gene coding for the 16 {S} ribosomal {RNA}, they were found to be affiliated to {R}hizobium, {S}inorhizobium, and {A}grobacterium but several strains had sequences with separate positions. {I}nterestingly one of these was further assigned to {P}hyllobacterium. {O}pposite to rhizobia, the distribution of the two {M}edicago species varied along the salinity gradient, {M}. ciliaris being dominant in the low {N}a{C}l concentration zones and {M}. polymorpha dominant in the most saline zones. {T}olerance to salinity, of both bacterial and plant partners, was studied under laboratory conditions, showing that plants are susceptible to {N}a{C}l concentrations of 50m{M}, 15-fold lower than that of their associated rhizobia (800m{M}).}, keywords = {{A}lgeria ; {M}edicago ; rhizobium ; salinity ; {ALGERIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}rid {L}and {R}esearch and {M}anagement}, volume = {20}, numero = {3}, pages = {219--231}, ISSN = {1532-4982}, year = {2006}, DOI = {10.1080/15324980600705685}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010072624}, }
