@inproceedings{fdi:010072134, title = {{S}ocio-economic importance of {E}thmalose and the spatial and temporal distribution of its abundance in {G}uinea [r{\'e}sum{\'e}]}, author = {{C}amara, {M}.{L}. and {D}iallo, {I}. and {J}ouffre, {D}idier}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n {G}uinea, among the small pelagics exploited, ethmalose is the subject of an intense maritime artisanal fishing and constitutes one of the most important species from an economic point of view. {T}he present study aims to highlight the socio-economic importance of the fishing of ethmalose and to analyze the spatio-temporal distribution of its abundance. {W}e exploited the database of the {N}ational {C}enter for {F}isheries {S}cience in {B}oussoura to estimate: (i) the number of canoes targeting ethmalose, (ii) the evolution of landings over the period 1995-2013, (iii) the number of jobs generated by this fishery and (iv) breeding periods. {T}he results indicate that the number of pirogues targeting ethmalose is constantly increasing. {F}rom 978 in 1992 to over 3,800 in 2016. {A}t the same time, landings increased from 23,613 kg in 1995 to more than 74,900 kg in 2013. {O}ver the period 1995-2013, catches of ethmalose constituted one third of artisanal landings. {T}hese landings are unevenly distributed in time and space. {T}he period from {O}ctober to {J}anuary corresponds to good fishing. {L}ow catches are recorded from {F}ebruary to {S}eptember. {T}he main fishing grounds are the {B}ok{\'e} and {B}offa prefectures on the northern coast, where seasonal upwelling is prevalent. {E}thmalose reproduces throughout the year with a peak observed in {S}eptember. {T}he direct employment generated by this fishery is estimated at 17 000.}, keywords = {{AFRIQUE} {DE} {L}'{OUEST} ; {ATLANTIQUE} ; {GUINEE}}, numero = {}, pages = {93}, booktitle = {{I}nternational conference {ICAWA} 2016 : extended book of abstract : the {AWA} project : ecosystem approach to the management of fisheries and the marine environment in {W}est {A}frican waters}, year = {2017}, ISBN = {978-2-9553602-0-5}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010072134}, }
