@article{fdi:010071973, title = {{C}omparison of efficiency of {BG}-sentinel traps baited with mice, mouse-litter, and {CO}2 lures for field sampling of male and female {A}edes albopictus mosquitoes}, author = {{L}e {G}off, {G}ilbert and {D}amiens, {D}avid and {R}uttee, {A}. {H}. and {P}ayet, {L}. and {L}ebon, {C}. and {D}ehecq, {J}. {S}. and {G}eier, {M}. and {G}ouagna, {L}ouis-{C}l{\'e}ment}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{D}etermining the abundance and distribution of male mosquitoes in the wild and establishing species seasonality in candidate pilot sites is of particular interest with respect to the use of the sterile-male technique. {W}ith the knowledge that using mice as bait in {BG}-{S}entinel traps effectively enhances {A}edes albopictus male and female trapping success, the present study was designed to determine whether attractants derived from mouse odour blend could be a viable substitute for live mice to lure {A}e. albopictus mosquitoes into traps. {T}he effects of baiting {BG}-{S}entinel traps with mice, carbon dioxide ({CO}2), and attractants derived from litter mouse odours (mouse litter ({ML})) and a mouse odour blend ({MOB}) on the efficiency of trapping {A}e. albopictus males and females were tested using a {L}atin square design. {T}he {BG}-{S}entinel trap baited with {CO}2 + {ML} caught a significantly larger number of mosquitoes compared to traps baited with mice only. {T}he {BG}-{S}entinel traps containing only {CO}2 or {CO}2 + {MOB}, however, did not catch significantly more mosquitoes compared to the other traps. {T}he proportions of males caught in the {BG}-{S}entinel traps did not differ significantly between the respective attractants. {T}he results from this study confirm that {CO}2 bait is efficient to provide a reliable estimation method for {A}e. albopictus adult male abundance in the wild, and suggest that mouse litter baits in combination with {CO}2 could be used to enhance {A}edes trapping success in {BG}-{S}entinel traps.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nsects}, volume = {8}, numero = {3}, pages = {art. 95 [8 p.]}, ISSN = {2075-4450}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.3390/insects8030095}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010071973}, }
