@article{fdi:010071374, title = {{A}re {S}ea {S}urface {T}emperature satellite measurements reliable proxies of lagoon temperature in the {S}outh {P}acific ?}, author = {{V}an {W}ynsberge, {S}. and {M}enk{\`e}s, {C}hristophe and {L}e {G}endre, {R}. and {P}assfield, {T}. and {A}ndr{\'e}fou{\¨e}t, {S}erge}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n remote coral reef environments, lagoon and reef in situ measurements of temperature are scarce. {S}ea {S}urface {T}emperature ({SST}) measured by satellite has been frequently used as a proxy of the lagoon temperature experienced by coral reef organisms ({T}-{L}) especially during coral bleaching events. {H}owever, the link between {SST} and {T}-{L} is poorly characterized. {F}irst, we compared the correlation between various {SST} series and {T}-{L} from 2012 to 2016 in three atolls and one island in the {C}entral {S}outh {P}acific {O}cean. {S}imple linear correlation between {SST} and {T}-{L} ranged between 0.44 and 0.97 depending on lagoons, localities of sensors, and type of {SST} data. {H}igh-resolution-satellite-measutements of {SST} inside the lagoons did not outperform oceanic {SST} series, suggesting that {SST} products are not adapted for small lagoons. {S}econd, we modelled the difference between oceanic {SST} and {T}-{L} as a function of the drivers of lagoon water renewal and mixing, namely waves, tide, wind, and season. {T}he multivariate models reduced significantly the bias between oceanic {SST} and {T}-{L}. {I}n atoll lagoons, and probably in other hydrodynamically semi-open systems, a correction taking into account these factors is necessary when {SST} are used to characterize organisms' thermal stress thresholds.}, keywords = {{A}toll lagoon ; {P}acific islands ; {R}eef aperture ; {C}limate change ; {S}ea {S}urface {T}emperature ; {PACIFIQUE} {SUD}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}stuarine {C}oastal and {S}helf {S}cience}, volume = {199}, numero = {}, pages = {117--124}, ISSN = {0272-7714}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1016/j.ecss.2017.09.033}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010071374}, }
