@article{fdi:010071231, title = {{A} reassessment of the suspended sediment load in the {M}adeira {R}iver basin from the {A}ndes of {P}eru and {B}olivia to the {A}mazon {R}iver in {B}razil, based on 10 years of data from the {HYBAM} monitoring programme}, author = {{V}auchel, {P}hilippe and {S}antini, {W}illiam and {G}uyot, {J}ean-{L}oup and {M}oquet, {J}. {S}. and {M}artinez, {J}ean-{M}ichel and {E}spinoza, {J}. {C}. and {B}aby, {P}atrice and {F}uertes, {O}. and {N}oriega, {L}. and {P}uita, {O}. and {S}ondag, {F}rancis and {F}raizy, {P}ascal and {A}rmijos, {E}. and {C}ochonneau, {G}{\'e}rard and {T}imouk, {F}ranck and de {O}liveira, {E}. and {F}ilizola, {N}. and {M}olina, {J}. and {R}onchail, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {M}adeira {R}iver is the second largest tributary of.the {A}mazon {R}iver. {I}t contributes approximately 13% of the {A}mazon {R}iver flow and it may contribute up to 50% of its sediment discharge to the {A}tlantic {O}cean. {U}ntil now, the suspended sediment load of the {M}adeira {R}iver was not well known and was estimated in a broad range from 240 to 715 {M}t yr(-1). {S}ince 2002, the {HYBAM} international network developed a new monitoring programme specially designed to provide more reliable data than in previous intents. {I}t is based on the continuous monitoring of a set of 11 gauging stations in the {M}adeira {R}iver watershed from the {A}ndes piedmont to the confluence with the {A}mazon {R}iver, and discrete sampling of the suspended sediment concentration every 7 or 10 days. {T}his paper presents the results of the suspended sediment data obtained in the {M}adeira drainage basin during 2002-2011. {T}he {M}adeira {R}iver suspended sediment load is estimated at 430 {M}t yr-1 near its confluence with the {A}mazon {R}iver. {T}he average production of the {M}adeira {R}iver {A}ndean catchment is estimated at 640 {M}t yr(-1) (+/- 30%), the corresponding sediment yield for the {A}ndes is estimated at 3000 t km(-2) yr(-1) (+/- 30%), and the average denudation rate is estimated at 1.20 mm yr(-1) (+/- 30%). {C}ontrary to previous results that had mentioned high sedimentation rates in the {B}eni {R}iver floodplain, we detected no measurable sedimentation process in this part of the basin. {O}n the {M}amore {R}iver basin, we observed heavy sediment deposition of approximately 210 {M}t yr(-1) that seem to confirm previous studies. {B}ut while these studies mentioned heavy sedimentation in the floodplain, we showed that sediment deposition occurred mainly in the {A}ndean piedmont and immediate foreland in rivers ({P}arapeti, {G}rande, {P}irai, {Y}apacani, {C}himore, {C}hapare, {S}ecure, {M}aniqui) with discharges that are not sufficiently large to transport their sediment load downstream in the lowlands.}, keywords = {{A}mazon basin ; {M}adeira {R}iver ; {S}uspended sediment load ; {A}ndes erosion rate ; {E}rosion sedimentation denudation ; {A}nnual fluxes ; {PEROU} ; {BOLIVIE} ; {BRESIL} ; {ANDES} ; {MADEIRA} {BASSIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {H}ydrology}, volume = {553}, numero = {}, pages = {35--48}, ISSN = {0022-1694}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jhydrol.2017.07.018}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010071231}, }
