@article{fdi:010069976, title = {{S}trong fisheries management and governance positively impact ecosystem status}, author = {{B}undy, {A}. and {C}huenpagdee, {R}. and {B}oldt, {J}. {L}. and {B}orges, {M}. {D}. and {C}amara, {M}. {L}. and {C}oll, {M}arta and {D}iallo, {I}. and {F}ox, {C}. and {F}ulton, {E}. {A}. and {G}azihan, {A}. and {J}arre, {A}. and {J}ouffre, {D}idier and {K}leisner, {K}. {M}. and {K}night, {B}. and {L}ink, {J}. and {M}atiku, {P}. {P}. and {M}asski, {H}. and {M}outopoulos, {D}. {K}. and {P}iroddi, {C}. and {R}aid, {T}. and {S}obrino, {I}. and {T}am, {J}. and {T}hiao, {D}. and {T}orres, {M}. {A}. and {T}sagarakis, {K}. and van der {M}eeren, {G}. {I}. and {S}hin, {Y}unne-{J}ai}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{F}isheries have had major negative impacts on marine ecosystems, and effective fisheries management and governance are needed to achieve sustainable fisheries, biodiversity conservation goals and thus good ecosystem status. {T}o date, the {I}ndi{S}eas programme ({I}ndicators for the {S}eas) has focussed on assessing the ecological impacts of fishing at the ecosystem scale using ecological indicators. {H}ere, we explore fisheries {M}anagement {E}ffectiveness' and {G}overnance {Q}uality' and relate this to ecosystem health and status. {W}e developed a dedicated expert survey, focused at the ecosystem level, with a series of questions addressing aspects of management and governance, from an ecosystem-based perspective, using objective and evidence-based criteria. {T}he survey was completed by ecosystem experts (managers and scientists) and results analysed using ranking and multivariate methods. {R}esults were further examined for selected ecosystems, using expert knowledge, to explore the overall findings in greater depth. {H}igher scores for {M}anagement {E}ffectiveness' and {G}overnance {Q}uality' were significantly and positively related to ecosystems with better ecological status. {K}ey factors that point to success in delivering fisheries and conservation objectives were as follows: the use of reference points for management, frequent review of stock assessments, whether {I}llegal, {U}nreported and {U}nregulated ({IUU}) catches were being accounted for and addressed, and the inclusion of stakeholders. {A}dditionally, we found that the implementation of a long-term management plan, including economic and social dimensions of fisheries in exploited ecosystems, was a key factor in successful, sustainable fisheries management. {O}ur results support the thesis that good ecosystem-based management and governance, sustainable fisheries and healthy ecosystems go together.}, keywords = {{E}cological indicator ; ecosystem-based fisheries management ({EBFM}) ; expert evaluation ; fisheries governance quality ; fisheries management ; effectiveness ; socioeconomic indicators}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{F}ish and {F}isheries}, volume = {18}, numero = {3}, pages = {412--439}, ISSN = {1467-2960}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1111/faf.12184}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010069976}, }
