@article{fdi:010069437, title = {{H}istorical changes of the {M}editerranean {S}ea ecosystem : modelling the role and impact of primary productivity and fisheries changes over time}, author = {{P}iroddi, {C}. and {C}oll, {M}arta and {L}iquete, {C}. and {M}acias, {D}. and {G}reer, {K}. and {B}uszowski, {J}. and {S}teenbeek, {J}. and {D}anovaro, {R}. and {C}hristensen, {V}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {M}editerranean {S}ea has been defined "under siege" because of intense pressures from multiple human activities; yet there is still insufficient information on the cumulative impact of these stressors on the ecosystem and its resources. {W}e evaluate how the historical (1950-2011) trends of various ecosystems groups/species have been impacted by changes in primary productivity ({PP}) combined with fishing pressure. {W}e investigate the whole {M}editerranean {S}ea using a food web modelling approach. {R}esults indicate that both changes in {PP} and fishing pressure played an important role in driving species dynamics. {Y}et, {PP} was the strongest driver upon the {M}editerranean {S}ea ecosystem. {T}his highlights the importance of bottom-up processes in controlling the biological characteristics of the region. {W}e observe a reduction in abundance of important fish species (similar to 34%, including commercial and noncommercial) and top predators (similar to 41%), and increases of the organisms at the bottom of the food web (similar to 23%). {E}cological indicators, such as community biomass, trophic levels, catch and diversity indicators, reflect such changes and show overall ecosystem degradation over time. {S}ince climate change and fishing pressure are expected to intensify in the {M}editerranean {S}ea, this study constitutes a baseline reference for stepping forward in assessing the future management of the basin.}, keywords = {{MEDITERRANEE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}cientific {R}eports - {N}ature}, volume = {7}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 44491 [18 p.]}, ISSN = {2045-2322}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1038/srep44491}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010069437}, }
