@article{fdi:010069306, title = {"{T}imes are changing" : the impact of {HIV} diagnosis on {S}ub-{S}aharan migrants' lives in {F}rance}, author = {{G}osselin, {A}. and {L}eli{\`e}vre, {E}. and {R}avalihasy, {A}ndrainolo and {L}ydie, {N}. and {L}ert, {F}. and {D}esgr{\'e}es du {L}oû, {A}nnabel}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground {M}igrants account for 35% of {HIV} diagnoses in the {E}uropean {U}nion ({ECDC}/{WHO} 2014). {L}ittle is known about the impact of such a lifelong infection diagnosis on lives that are already disrupted by migration. {I}n this paper, we assess the impact of {HIV} diagnosis on activity, union, well-being among {A}frican migrants living in {F}rance, the second group most affected by {HIV} after {MSM}. {W}e compare it with the impact of the diagnosis of {H}epatitis {B}, another lifelong infection affecting {A}frican migrants. {M}ethods {W}e use the {ANRS} {PARCOURS} survey, a retrospective life-event survey led in 2012-2013 in 74 health structures in {P}aris greater area which collected 926 life histories of {S}ub-{S}aharan migrants living with {HIV} and 779 with {H}epatitis {B}. {W}e modelled the probability year by year since 18 years of age until data collection to lose one's activity, to experience a conjugal break up and degradation of well-being and we estimated the impact of migration and of {HIV} and {H}epatitis {B} diagnoses on these probabilities, after adjustment on other factors, thanks to discrete-time logistic regressions. {R}esults {M}igration entailed loss of activity and conjugal break up, though {HIV} diagnosis after migration did not statistically impact on these outcomes. {Y}et {HIV} diagnosis had a massive negative impact on well-being (a{OR} = 11.31 [4.64-27.56] for men and 5.75 [2.79 -11.86] for women). {T}his negative impact on well-being tended to diminish for persons diagnosed after 2004. {T}he negative impact of {HIV} diagnosis on {A}frican migrants' well-being seems to be attenuated in the last decade, which hints at a normalization of the subjective experience of {HIV} diagnosis.}, keywords = {{FRANCE} ; {AFRIQUE} {SUBSAHARIENNE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}los {O}ne}, volume = {12}, numero = {1}, pages = {e0170226 [18 ]}, ISSN = {1932-6203}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1371/journal.pone.0170226}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010069306}, }
