@article{fdi:010069209, title = {{M}olecular and pathotypic characterization of new {X}anthomonas oryzae strains from {W}est {A}frica}, author = {{G}onzalez, {C}arolina and {S}zurek, {B}oris and {M}anceau, {C}. and {M}athieu, {T}hierry and {S}{\'e}r{\'e}, {Y}. and {V}erdier, {V}al{\'e}rie}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{DNA} polymorphism analysis and pathogenicity assays were used to characterize strains of {X}anthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae and {X}anthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola collected from rice leaves in {W}est {A}frica. {R}estriction fragment length polymorphism ({RFLP}), repetitive sequence-based polymerase chain reaction, fluorescent amplified fragment-length polymorphism ({FAFLP}) analyses were assessed for molecular characterization, while pathogenicity was tested by leaf clipping and leaf infiltration. {D}endrograms were generated for the data sets obtained from {RFLP} analysis and repetitive polymerase chain reaction suggesting that the interrelationships between strains were dependent on the technique used. {I}n all cases, data showed that {A}frican strains of {X}. oryzae pv. oryzae form a group genetically distant from {A}sian strains. {FAFLP} analyses separated the {X}. oryzae strains into three groups with significant bootstrap values. {A} specific and intriguing feature of {A}frican strains of {X}. oryzae pv. oryzae is a reduction in the number of insertion sequence elements and transcription activator-like (avr{B}s3/pth{A}) effector genes, based on the molecular markers employed in the study. {I}n addition, pathogenicity assays conducted with {A}frican strains of {X}. oryzae pv. oryzae on a series of nearly isogenic lines ({NIL}s) identified three new races. {F}inally, leaf infiltration assays revealed the capacity of {A}frican strains of {X}. oryzae pv. oryzae to induce a nonhost hypersensitive response in {N}icotiana benthamiana, in contrast with {A}sian {X}. oryzae pv. oryzae and {X}. oryzae pv. oryzicola strains. {O}ur results reveal substantial differences between genomic characteristics of {A}sian and {A}frican strains of {X}. oryzae pv. oryzae.}, keywords = {{MALI} ; {NIGER} ; {BURKINA} {FASO}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}olecular {P}lant {M}icrobe {I}nteractions}, volume = {20}, numero = {5}, pages = {534--546}, ISSN = {0894-0282}, year = {2007}, DOI = {10.1094/{MPMI}-20-5-0534}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010069209}, }
