  abstract = {{W}e conducted field studies in 15 {W}est {A}frican countries and collected one thousand specimens of lizards of the genus {A}gama. {B}ased on these collections, literature, molecular analysis of selected specimens, and examination of {L}innean type-specimens of {A}. agama, we review the phylogeny, taxonomy, geographic distribution and ecology of the {W}est {A}frican species of the genus {A}gama. {S}eventeen different species are recognized in the genus {A}gama in {W}est {A}frica, northern {C}ameroon and {C}had: {A}. africana, {A}. agama, {A}. boensis, {A}. boueti, {A}. boulengeri, {A}. castroviejoi, {A}. cristata, {A}. doriae benueensis, {A}. gracilimembris, {A}. insularis, {A}. lebretoni, {A}. paragama, {A}. sankaranica, {A}. weidholzi, and three new species. {W}e design a lectotype for {A}. agama ({L}innaeus, 1758) and attribute to {A}. wagneri, sp. nov., the populations from northern and central {C}ameroon of the {A}. agama complex. {A}gama parafricana, sp. nov., is described from wet savanna areas of {T}ogo and {B}enin. {A}gama sylvanus from southern {G}hana is a junior synonym of {A}. africana. {A}gama cf. impalearis from northern {N}iger and {M}ali corresponds to an nondescribed species. {A}gama boensis is resurrected from the synonymy of {A}. sankaranica. {A}ccording to biogeographic areas, four species are {S}ahelian, seven species are {S}udanian, four species are {G}uinean, and two species are ubiquitous.},
