@article{fdi:010068931, title = {{T}oward a socio-territorial approach to health : health equity in {W}est {A}frica [+ {C}orrection]}, author = {{V}ialard, {L}. and {S}quiban, {C}. and {F}ournet, {F}lorence and {S}alem, {G}. and {F}oley, {E}. {E}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his study contributes to the literature about the effects of space and place on health by introducing a socio-territorial approach to urban health disparities in {W}est {A}frica. {I}t explores how urban spaces, specifically neighbourhoods, are shaped by social and economic relations and strategies of territorial control. {W}e examine the potential influence of socio-territorial processes on vulnerability to disease, access to medical care, healthscapes, and illness experiences. {O}ur research was conducted in {S}enegal and relied on a mixed methods design. {W}e identified four neighbourhoods that represent the socio-spatial heterogeneity of the city of {S}aint-{L}ouis and utilized the following methods: geographic and anthropological field research, household surveys, health knowledge and behaviour surveys, clinical exams, and illness interviews. {O}ur results highlight the socio-territorial processes at work in each neighbourhood, clinical findings on three health measures (overweight, high blood pressure, and hyperglycaemia) and health experiences of individuals with hypertension or type {II} diabetes. {W}e found significant differences in the prevalence of the three health measures in the study sites, while experiences managing hypertension and diabetes were similar. {W}e conclude that a socio-territorial approach offers insight into the complex constellation of forces that produce health disparities in urban settings.}, keywords = {socio-territorial approach ; health disparities ; hypertension ; diabetes ; urban health ; {W}est {A}frica ; {SENEGAL} ; {SAINT} {LOUIS}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nternational {J}ournal of {E}nvironmental {R}esearch and {P}ublic {H}ealth}, volume = {14}, numero = {1}, pages = {art. 106 [23 + correction]}, ISSN = {1660-4601}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.3390/ijerph14010106}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068931}, }
