@article{fdi:010068884, title = {{S}uperclone expansion, long-distance clonal dispersal and local genetic structuring in the coral {P}ocillopora damicornis type beta in {R}eunion {I}sland, {S}outh {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean}, author = {{G}{\'e}lin, {P}auline and {F}auvelot, {C}{\'e}cile and {M}ehn, {V}. and {B}ureau, {S}. and {R}ouz{\'e}, {H}. and {M}agalon, {H}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he scleractinian coral {P}ocillopora damicornis type beta is known to present a mixed reproduction mode: through sexual reproduction, new genotypes are created, while asexual reproduction insures their propagation. {I}n order to investigate the relative proportion of each reproduction mode in {P}. damicornis type beta populations from {R}eunion {I}sland, {I}ndian {O}cean, clonal propagation along the west coast was assessed through four sampling sites with increasing geographical distance between sites. {C}oral colonies were sampled either exhaustively, randomly or haphazardly within each site, and genotypic diversity was assessed using 13 microsatellite loci over a total of 510 {P}. damicornis type beta determined a posteriori from their mt{DNA} haplotype (a 840 bp sequenced fragment of the {O}pen {R}eading {F}rame). {O}verall, 47% of all the sampled colonies presented the same multi-locus genotype ({MLG}), a superclone, suggesting that asexual propagation is extremely important in {R}eunion {I}sland. {W}ithin each site, numerous {MLG}s were shared by several colonies, suggesting local clonal propagation through fragmentation. {M}oreover, some of these {MLG}s were found to be shared among several sites located 40 km apart. {W}hile asexual reproduction by fragmentation seems unlikely over long distances, our results suggest a production of parthenogenetic larvae. {D}espite shared {MLG}s, two differentiated clusters were enclosed among populations of the west coast of {R}eunion {I}sland, revealing the necessity to set up appropriate managing strategies at a local scale.}, keywords = {{REUNION} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}los {O}ne}, volume = {12}, numero = {1}, pages = {e0169692 [19 p.]}, ISSN = {1932-6203}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1371/journal.pone.0169692}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068884}, }
