  abstract = {{A}ttempts have been made to express or to merge different {C}ry proteins in order to enhance toxic effects against various insects. {C}ry1{A} proteins of {B}acillus thuringiensis form a typical bipyramidal parasporal crystal and their protoxins contain a highly conserved {C}-terminal region. {A} chimerical gene, called cry(4{B}a-1{A}c), formed by a fusion of the {N}-terminus part of cry4{B}a and the {C}-terminus part of cry1{A}c, was constructed. {I}ts transformation to an acrystalliferous {B}. thuringiensis strain showed that it was expressed as a chimerical protein of 116 k{D}a, assembled in spherical to amorphous parasporal crystals. {T}he chimerical gene cry(4{B}a-1{A}c) was introduced in a {B}. thuringiensis kurstaki strain. {I}n the generated crystals of the recombinant strain, the presence of {C}ry(4{B}a-1{A}c) was evidenced by {MALDI}-{TOF}. {T}he recombinant strain showed an important increase of the toxicity against {C}ulex pipiens larvae ({LC}50 = 0.84 mg l(-1) +/- 0.08) compared to the wild type strain through the synergistic activity of {C}ry2{A}a with {C}ry(4{B}a-1{A}c). {T}he enhancement of toxicity of {B}. thuringiensis kurstaki expressing {C}ry(4{B}a-1{A}c) compared to that expressing the native toxin {C}ry4{B}a, might be related to its a typical crystallization properties. {T}he developed fusion protein could serve as a potent toxin against different pests of mosquitoes and major crop plants.},
