  abstract = {{I}n {M}arch 2013, 40 leading experts from across the world gathered at a workshop, hosted by the {E}uropean {C}ommission, {D}irectorate {G}eneral {J}oint {R}esearch {C}entre, {I}taly, to discuss the multiple benefits of soil carbon as part of a {R}apid {A}ssessment {P}rocess ({RAP}) project commissioned by {S}cientific {C}ommittee on {P}roblems of the {E}nvironment ({SCOPE}). {T}his collaboration led to the publication of the {SCOPE} {S}eries {V}olume 71 "{S}oil {C}arbon: {S}cience, {M}anagement and {P}olicy for {M}ultiple {B}enefits"; which brings together the essential scientific evidence and policy opportunities regarding the global importance of soil carbon. {T}his short communication summarises the key messages of the assessment including research and policy implications.},
